So.. when is this switch going to occur?
Very soon. Maybe starting tomorrow, maybe the day after. It all depends on when the server gets set up.
w00t
does this mean no more system overloads
Pretty much, hence the "drastically improve the performance" line.

Wow, I bow down to you Anthony.
I'm sure that this will make the site even better than it is already. Well Done Ant for paying and all the rest of the admins. :-)
As Steph said, at least it will give some of us a break. :-)

Well this is why I have major man-love for Ant.
And I think this is a good time of year to do it, cause we should be with our families not on the internet. But can we have a warning of a day before it happens? And will anything be lost?
Kiros
December 21st, 2008, 08:43 AM
This is your warning. We can't get much more specific because if we post something a few minutes before the site goes down, barely anyone at all would get to read it.
Nothing should be lost. We're going to do a full transfer, including the database.

Okay, so it's happening soon. Got it.

Since the Server is getting switched what kind of new features should we be looking for afterwords.
Kiros
December 21st, 2008, 04:08 PM
Nothing major, just a few user-friendly options like a smaller time limit on the search/email features; immediate updates for subscriptions, thread views, and attachment views; and a few more things that you all might like :)
If we get more of a performance boost than we thought possible, it could lead to quite a few tasty possibilities. And no, I'm not going to say what those possibilities are because they haven't even been discussed.

sounds interesting :P
and thanl< you ant! How much does it cost?
Kiros
December 21st, 2008, 04:50 PM
It's a good bit. But to be a tad more specific, it cost more than a Twix (http://www.mars.com/global/Global+brands/Snackfood/Twix.htm) but less than a new Porsche (http://www.porsche.com/usa/models/911/911-gt2/).

so between a buck and 50 grand.
and i got another question, will the font formatting still be the same and not like gov, where they don't show the [ COLOR="Yellow"] or [ SIZE="3"], etc.?

Nothing like that will change, that's all to do with vbulletin.
At the moment were eating off a paper plate. Once we upgrade we'll be eating off a china plate with gold decorations. The food will taste the same but it's much better :)

Its basically a massive hard drive, that you can store data on and have it displayed on the internet.
If you just bought a domain name (like virtualteen.org) it wouldnt be accessible without a host.
But since its very hard to work it all together, and have such lard hard drives, most people opt to buy server hosting [$/month] instead of using their own
Kiros

I suppose I should clarify.
A host is really the company doing the hosting. For instance, DotServant is/was our host. The computers that do the hosting are called servers. Servers are simply computers that host something - a website, an online game, etc. I could host VirtualTeen.org from my computer. Anyone with an internet connection can. The thing is, our internet connections (even the fast ones with 20Mb/s down and 2Mb/s up) are not enough to support the site. VirtualTeen.org has thousands of unique visitors everyday. No one here has the kind of upload bandwidth with their internet to properly host such a site.
That's the main reason that people need hosts: they have the powerful servers, the extreme bandwidth, and the impeccable uptime, whereas individuals don't.

and i assume the switch is because vt keeps giving that 'server too busy' mesage?

Although it seemed longer, this procedure was completed in less than 48 hours.
Thanks for being patient, guys.

I wish... Eh, I'm starting to think that the borders on the new logo stand out too much. Maybe they're too bright. Would it really look better with them dimmed down a bit? :?
Sapphire
December 24th, 2008, 08:43 AM
I am inclined to agree that maybe if they were dimmed a little it would look better.
Other than that it's cool :)
Requin
December 24th, 2008, 08:59 AM
I think it seems OK. It suits it, unless you've already dimmed it?
Lol
Kiros
December 24th, 2008, 09:05 AM
No, I haven't dimmed the borders yet, but I plan on doing so after I wake up.
I'm off to bed (finally).
