It's personal preference really. I say 2 or 3 years difference max under the age of 18.

Age fourteen and seventeen isn't really bad. I am sixteen and I wouldn't consider dating anyone more than a year younger (though I prefer being the younger person in the relationship.) It's basically personal preference within reason and I see nothing wrong with it.

3 years now is probably a big gap. Lot's of differences in maturity and experience and expectations and abilities to address and cope with the many feelings that come up in an emotional relationship.

I wouldn't do more than 2 personally. I think 1 year is perfect though :), but that is IMO
