It's not part of puberty. It's probably caused by increased stress, since I'm guessing you have a lot more stress now than when you were 6. It is kind of a problem and you should try to stop as hard as possible, since it seems to kind of be interfering here. Try putting something that has a HORRIBLE taste on your fingernails. It would be even better if you couldn't smell it, because you don't need other people to smell it, but if there is something that tastes horrible you can put on your fingers, do it.

it can also be a habit that you don't stop. I bite my nails eventhough I shouldn't but. I've been doing it for years.

No, nail biting is not a part of puberty.
Who knows how it started, mayeb it was a reaction to stress, or boredom. But, now, it's likely just a bad habit. And if your g/f says you'd rather do THAT than mke out, it could turn into a REAL problem, eh?
Treat this as you would any other habit, with some forced awareness, be extra mindful of where your hands are, and consciously keep your hands away from your mouth. Focus your attention on where your hands are and keep them out of your mouth. This will work in short order, just keep concentrating!

Try to ease off the nail biting, you can chip your teeth over time doing it.

It's true however stupid it may sound, because I have 2 chipped teeth because of it! Not good......
I bite my nails a lot too. I mostly do it because they hit my guitar strings when I don't want them to though. It is becoming a habit, and not a very good one.
Putting something disgusting on them works too. Something clear works better, but it doesn't matter a whole lot.

It's not part of puberty as others have said.
But I expect it's down to stess or if you are a partiulary nervous person then I would expect that this is a normal thing to do.
I expect that you started it because of the typical child thing of putting everything in your mouth, like I did, and I'm sure many others.
But it would do you good to quit. It's just a manner of will.

My dad has been a nail biter for as long as he can remember. Recently, he's starting using this stuff (http://www.folica.com/Orly_No_Bite_d515.html). There are other brands with similar products, but that's the one he's using. It's clear, so no one will know you're wearing it. It tastes bitter, which is supposed to discourage you from biting your nails. Other brands, including Stop (http://www.folica.com/MAVALA_Stop_for_d442.html), supposedly have a stronger taste, if the first one doesn't really help. It's slowly working for my dad. He's actually had to cut his nails a few times now, although he does still keep them very short--he's used to seeing them that way.
It may also help to tell your friends and family that you're trying to break the habit. When they see you doing it, they should remind you not to. Sometimes, when a habit is so ingrained, you don't realize that you're doing it. Having someone else to act as your conscience can help.
Post-Script: You can find those products at your local Sally's Beauty Supply, and possibly the drug store/pharmacy place. So you don't have to buy them online. :)

I have the same problem but I do it when I'm stressed. Maybe you're stressed about something. I don't have any tips for helping you stop because I'm in the same situation. So if anyone has any suggestions for stopping it would be nice and helpful if they would post them!
