A disgruntled employee who was laid off this week walked into his former company's Christmas party in east Vancouver on Friday and opened fire, killing one person, police said.

The gunman was taken into custody at around 6 p.m., about 90 minutes after the shooting took place, after talking on the phone with police negotiators, Vancouver police Const. Tim Fanning said.

Fanning said the gunman, whose name has not been released, did not take any hostages and let others at the party leave the party.

Police were called to the scene at around 4:30 p.m. and cordoned off three city blocks near Quebec Street and East 5th Avenue.

Fanning said the company sells natural-health products and laid off some staff, including the gunman, earlier this week.

Police are currently taking statements from witnesses.

A dozen emergency vehicles were on the scene and traffic was being re-routed.
