A LOT of kids of anger problems in their child hood yet mellow out by the time they hit puberty. Most children at that age don't have any form of self expression but anger, or racing thoughts etc. It could've been triggered by troubling events when you were younger if you can think of any.

I think that as a child you are still learning how to deal with the emotions that your are feeling.
Eventually we learn that throwing things and hitting stuff will get your know where.
Kind of like when you are little you fall down and cry and cry but eventually you learn how to deal with minor pain from stuff like that.

Well, you were there and seem to remember, so you'd be in the best place now to undertand what it meant then, and what implications it could have now about self harming.
At the very least, your remembering it now suggests that it stood out for you for some reason, we tend to remember those things that matter. Maybe you were going thru a rough time, maybe something was going on for you that was really emotional and that was your way of dealing with it. Perhaps you could ask your folks and see what was happening back then.
Yesterday is connected to today, we are who we've always been. However, the way we deal with, cope, and express those sentiments change with time. You should assess if the way you deal with stress now is any way at all destructive to you and make modifications to avoid lapsing into old patterns.
