This is somewhat of a debate, but it's more just talking about a sport, so I put it here.
After having a conversation with Matt, I have a question. Do you think UFC or other branches of MMA (mixed martial arts) is fake and scripted like professional wresting?

Real in my opinion. There is no script.
Wrestling has it's 'faces' and 'heels'. It is basically a movie where you can get behind your favourite character based on choices they make.
Is Boxing fake? Kickboxing? No. These are real sports. So in my opinion, UFC is real, because there is no story behind what occurs. Just different fighters competing.

That is exactly what it is. Professional wrestling such is WWE is scripted. They don't even try to make it real, nor do the wrestlers claim there is anything real about the fighting (their athletic ability is very real however).
UFC and other MMA type fights are very real. Saying UFC is fake or scripted is like saying boxing is fake.

i was watching a match the other day, and it was real but i think it was prearranged.
The dude that lost wasn't even trying. I'm afraid UFC is getting corrupted, which would mean becoming scripted. Obviously not as much as WWE or fake wrestling.

I would say that is real. It is way to hard to fake the blood and cuts with spectators.

I think though it is not scripted, it isn't real. I think a good deal of it is showmanship, improv, and training. Two people will rehearse and work together to know how to do these dangerous moves safely as to not hurt the other person or yourself.

No, it isn't. Sure, there are matchmakers that put two fighters together where one fighter is a favorite. But, in MMA, anything can happen. However, in early PRIDE days, I heard some of the outcomes were predetermined (Example: Takada and Coleman). Overall, MMA is a real sport, like boxing or kickboxing or Judo or BJJ or wrestling or Sambo.
If you still don't think it's a real sport, train at the MMA gym in your area.

Of course there's showmanship. That's how fighters generate a fan base, get paid more, and get more sponsors. Organizations are looking for fighters to put on a great show and being exciting is part of the idea. As far as training goes, all fighters train.

Holy crap, I can't believe I didn't put how I felt about this. I was on the side saying that MMA is completely real.
And Addi, of course fighters train...if they didn't they'd like get very seriously injured or possibly die. UFC used to have very few rules, however too many fighters were passing away from fight related injuries, thus they had to implement rules, mainly dealing with head shots to a downed opponent. But it's like any other sport...Football players train, basketball players train...training is the only way to reduce the likelihood of injury.

For WWE and such, the wrestlers refer to themselves as performers. They are in my view very good athletes although it is scripted. For MMA (i.e. UFC), I don't believe it is because the results of the match are very real, that is, you cant fake some swelling on the face after a few good elbows or knee shots.
