...I have no idea how cell phones work but I'm quite sure you can't use MP3s as ringtones.

It depends on the phone quite a bit. By the looks of it, you need to have it encoded to about 90KBPS and to be under a certain size, Try encoding it to about 85KBps (just in case 90KBps is wrong) [it sounds dodgy through most phone speakers on high quality anyway] and keep it under about 100Kb and see if that works. Generally this works on most phones, but just keep experimenting, this works fine for Nokia phones and I believe it worked on a sony ericson as well. You'll just need to find what your phone is compatible with.

Most phones these days support MP3 and MIDI ringtones. They should work fine, also if you google the phone, it comes up with saying that its compatible with MP3 ringtones.

the ring tones that came on the phone are encoded for higher than 90kbps...do you think i should still try that? how do you code it for less?

Theres some programs out there that would to it for you WMP should let you encode something to a low Kbps, It might only read ringtones if they are in a certain folder, have you put them in the ringtones folder?
