Hey everybody,

From like the age of 9 I've had white marks on my fingernails and when I was wee I thought it was cause I didnt eat enough fruit or veg, however now that im pretty healthy now, I still have them. Also I drink a fair amount of milk so it can't be cause of the lack of calcium.

Whats causing them?

Also

How do I get rid of them?

There's a term for this.. I can't remeber it

Basiclly what it is is a minor bruse on your nail.. Don't ask how this works exactly, but apparently it's like if you slammed your fingers on something.. *shrugs* they're on the nail, and therefor don't go away until the nail grows out. As far as i know you can't get "rid" of them save for not using your hands

Ok guys thanks, after looking through wikki it could be that or a zinc deficiency so I might go visit the doctor, since its starting to be embarrassing since like no one I know at my school has them

there is no defiency. don't worry, a white mark is simply a place where your nail isn't touching the skin like it usually is due to an injury, bruise or the simple naturalness of it happening. if your entire fingernail fell off, it'd be all white. if you got a nail drove threw it, after it heals, the area of your fingernail would be white for years; but as the nail grows, it would touch the skin again and go pink, but theres still that white spot in the middle. and sometimes the white marks would grow out, and get cut off the next time you cut your fingernails.

I'm more on the side that the white marks are definately due to a vitamin deficiency.. So just do what you were already going to do and see your doc

i also heard that vitamin defiency causes this, and i forgot to mention it in the above post, but what i explained is usually the cause, but lack of vitamins can cause it to now that i think of it. but i don't think its worth seeing your doctor about, just take a multivitamin. if you see bad things happen like the early stages of Pellagra (googlize it); then your in a bad way and should see a doctor. but i believe you would have a lack of Vitamin K. it causes most fingernail problems..and blood clotting problems

Thanks for all input, I do think its just a deficiency of Zinc.

Mainly because they have been like that for more than 5 years, so its best to get it sorted, I'm going to the doctors soon anyway due to I have had small breathing attacks and I am getting tested for asthma ,

Right on the money. If it's really worrying you, try and get a zinc supplement from either the health store or the vitamin section of your supermarket.

It is a deficiency, I took two zinc tablets every day and it drastically improved my nails, it also helped my acne too.

I used to have them, but since I started taking multivitamins to compensate for my meat-centric diet (vegetables make me puke), they disappeared.
