New York, NY (AHN) - A Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) worker was killed when a crowd of unruly shoppers broke through the doors to a store early this morning in Long Island, New York, the local police official said on Friday.
The 34-year-old male worker was trying to hold back the crowd of around 200 shoppers at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, N.Y. before the doors were opened at 5 a.m. EST, the time when he was trampled.
"The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority," Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's biggest retailer, said in a statement.
According to Nassau County Police Department spokesman Michael Aronsen, the man was pronounced dead at the hospital an hour later after the reported incident.
The police have considered it as an "undetermined death" as the investigation continues. The officials said an autopsy is likely to determine the exact cause of death.
"The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority," Wal-Mart representative Dan Fogleman, was quoted saying by ABC News.
He added, "Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families at this difficult time. At this point, facts are still being assembled and we are working closely with the Nassau County police as they investigate what occurred."
Police said four other people were hurt in the trample, including a 28-year-old pregnant woman. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors said her baby was fine.
The store remained closed to incoming shoppers after the incident was reported. The shoppers in the store were escorted out with their purchases.
