A British supermarket worker is facing disciplinary action after he phoned into work sick and then posted status updates and photos from a night out on his Facebook page.

Tom Stones, who works as a shelf stacker, called in sick for a 6pm-10pm shift at a Tesco supermarket in Gloucester in England's southwest, the Telegraph newspaper reports.

But the 22-year-old was dobbed into management after writing "Tom had a good night xxx" on his Facebook page.

Mr Stones, who earns $14.70 an hour, has now reportedly been summoned to a disciplinary hearing.

"I wasn't out when I should have been working — I didn't go out until 11pm," Mr Stones was quoted as saying.

"I phoned in sick but later started to feel better and went up town."

A spokesperson for Tesco denied the company used the social networking site to spy on its employees.

The incident is similar to a case in Australia last month, which later turned out to be a prank.

Kyle Doyle, a Sydney call centre worker, claimed to have found himself in hot water after enjoying a similar night out.

In an email conversation that quickly swept the world, the 21-year-old AAPT resolutions expert was allegedly sprung by his boss after calling in sick and then updating his Facebook status to: "Kyle Doyle is not going to work, f*** it I'm still trashed. SICKIE WOO!".

When Doyle refused to provide a medical certificate, a screenshot of his Facebook status was allegedly emailed back to him by his supervisor, to which he replied: "HAHAHA LMAO [laughing my arse off] epic fail… no worries man".

After sparking worldwide media interest and going into hiding, Doyle's mother revealed that the entire conversation was a hoax.
