From Article:
OTTAWA – The Supreme Court of Canada has put its stamp of approval on a regulatory order forcing major airlines to provide an extra seat for free to disabled or obese passengers who need the room.... That would mean, for example, that a disabled person who needs additional room for a wheelchair, or an obese person who needs an additional seat, couldn't be charged extra.

dude if they're so fat they need TWO chairs
then they should have to pay for two
because the airplane has to turn on an auxillery jet engine just to get off

Are you serious?
Airlines are going bankrupt as it is...
So that means that everybody's air fare is going to go up to accomodate the loss in revenue.
If I was that big,
I'd be embarrased to fly anyway.

Disability I can understand... But... obese people shouldn't get it. Mind you, it would be good for all the Skinny people that they crush when sitting next to them:P

What if a fat person is the last on the plane?

If someone wants two seats on a plane because they are larger, then they should PAY for what they need. Bigger seats should cost more too.

I actually agree with the law. Think about his if your so obese that you have to have a special seat then most likely you'll have expensive medical bills you pay monthly, might be a diabetic so has to pay money for insulin and other stuff, and most likely the person has a heart disease and is constantly back and forth from the hospital so in a way they are paying that extra fee just not to the airport.

Lol I think that they should just make Business/First Class seats available for Economy price if a person can't fit in the Economy seat.

economy seats hurt my back i have scoliosis and permanent nerve damage
I demand a first class seat for economy prices too
or I'll sue for discrimination
My sister needs it to she has severe back problems ever since her accident
and so on
and so fourth
No they should just pay more

It sounds mean to make them pay more,
But it just gives them more of another incentive to lose weight.

Well actually some people could be overweight because they can't afford healthy foods and adding on the extra price for a seat will strain their wallet even more.

Yeah...
I can't afford to eat the healthiest,
And my meds make me gain weight,
But I limit my calorie intake to a healthy amount,
And walk a lot to help keep it off.
It's all about how you maintain yourself.

Tommy...
Airlines cant afford to pay for extra seats either
No one can afford it
So someone has to lose.
Anyways, healthy food doesnt cost much more than unhealthy food... Does it?
I wouldnt know for sure but it seems like it doesn't

Depends on where you go.
But on a good sales say,
20 cans of Chef Boyardee costs $10
and
A bag of mixed veggies costs anywhere from $5-$8.
So healthy food can be much more expensive.

People who are so fat they need two seats generally have a reason for being like that; an eating disorder. So why should someone who has a mental problem be treated worse than someone with a physical disability?

Okay, so what about a person with dwarfism that takes up not even 2/3 of the seat, we still make them pay for a whole seat right?

Exactly..
Seriously the only people I've ever seen or known who are THAT fat have brought it entirely on themselves eating disorder or no eating disorder all the people who I've ever seen/known/heard of who are like that don't even try to do anything about it they just get fatter & fatter
Sure somewhere there are some that try but still get fatter, but hey democracy basically ignores the few..

Do you happen to have any proof of this? A good chunk of Australians are obese with no mental illness that would have made them unable to control it(eating disorder) more often then anything else, obesity has caused the mental health problem. Zephyr Is right, its all about how you maintain yourself.

Agreed. Its getting way out of control.

on air labrador, because they are all newfies, we all share the same lovely sense of humor, so they say: if, you are overweight, and your spilling out into the seat next to you, remember, you paid for one seat now suck into it. and also ladies and gentlemen, there is a lifevest in a pouch underneath your seat, but i sees that most of you are overweight so you won't be needing it so i won't bother to demonstrate it, most of ya will float like bobbers.

I really don't like fat jokes. When I was younger I was a bit overweight and mercilessly teased which caused me to eat more and get fatter till I just stopped all together. So this is something kinda personal to me because I know what they are going through.

Do you happen to have any proof that they don't have eating disorders :S? Also, there's obese, and then there's so obese you can't fit in a seat... These are two different things..
Haha, maybe there's a certain waist size you have to be :p If you were a bit under you could just eat a bit more and get extra leg room XD

Unfortunantly, Air Labrador is now Air Canada Jazz, just like Air Ontario and BC air.
