A WOMAN is dead after after a high speed train crashed into a car in Melbourne this morning.
The crash happened at 7.22am (AEDT) at a level crossing on Abbotts Rd, Dandenong South.
The 6.20am Sprinter train en-route to Cranbourne from Flinders St stations was heading south when a car crashed through boom gates to cross the tracks before the collision, police said.
A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed the sole occupant of the car had died following the collision.
The driver and about 30 passengers on the V-line express service were believed to be uninjured.
A witness told Radio 3AW that the car was pushed nearly 300m along the track before the train could stop.
The boom gates came down, the train heading towards Cranbourne. I heard an almighty bang, and the train had no hope of stopping at that rate," he said.
Paramedic Andrew Watson told the radio station that it was a horrific scene, estimating the small car had been dragged about 250m.
"There's certainly a significant impact. Unfortunately the driver of the car has died. Luckily the 20-30 passengers have escaped any injuries," Mr Watson said.
Delays are expected on the Cranbourne line until early afternoon, with buses replacing train services.
Connex spokeswoman Kate de Clerq said it is expected that there will be train delays until noon.
“Buses will replace the train service between Cranbourne, Maroondah Park and Dandenong,” Ms de Clerq said.
