My new hard drive finally arrived today :) Samsung 1TB 32mb Cache, it was only £80 (~$160) including delivery.
Did a speed test on it and average read is 94.7mb/s, peaking at over 120mb/s. Very happy with it!

I saw a 1TB drive the other day for like 80$ USD after like 30$ rebate, and there's one I see right now for 109$. :P
Although, that particular drive here when I checked was $189 on Tigerdirect.com. It's 114$ on Newegg.com for the OEM. I know Newegg.com (although US only) had a 1.5TB drive for $189 a while back, and may still, I haven't checked recently.
I need more HDD space. I have a 500GB and a 203GB in my Desktop, and a 250GB in my Laptop, and an 80GB right now in my Server/Media Center.
The Desktop drives are both almost entirely full.
It annoys me how they measures the sizes in bytes, so you only have 931GB to play with instead of 1024GB like it technically should be.
EDIT: Just checked, the 1.5TB is 149$ now. :P

Computer stuff in america is always dirt cheap compared to here!
That really does bug me, they should stick to one unit on both the hardware and on the OS, then you get what's being advertised, because affectively I've lost out on 100GB!

Yeah, they're selling it to you in Bytes.
They Convert the GB or TB to Bytes, like:
1TB ---> 1,099,511,927,776 Bytes.
Then, they round it down from:
1,099,511,927,776 Bytes --> 1,000,000,000,000 Bytes.
And, if you convert that to GB you get:
1,000,000,000,000 Bytes --> ~ 931.32GB
So, if they ever get to like a 25TB Drive, that's somewhere around
27,500,000,000,000 bytes, if you approximate it, which I believe if they followed the same convention, would "round" it to 25,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is 22.7TB, so you'd lose 1.3TB. :P
False Advertising and Very aggravating. :P

I still got my 62.4mb hard drive ;)
It's crazy though, the 62.4mb hard drive is exactly the same size as my 1tb drive, madness!

What are you going to do with all that space?

Lots and lots of boobs...lol
I'd be happy with a 250GB HD on a new laptop :P I wouldn't need 1TB of space, I don't have enough enough for that lol

You have so much room on your computer. How have you used up over 300gb overall? That's crazy.

Easily, it soon fills up with a few films, 3000 songs, loads of different programs, 50gb of pictures

My dream gaming rig would cost thousands, as well as spending hundresds on it upgrading every 6 weeks lol.
My next buy for this computer is a 150gb Raptor and an extra 2gb RAM.

I have 2x150gb Raptors in RAID 0. They aren't quiet.

Getting either 2x300gb VelociRaptors or 4x150gb VelociRaptors for xmas.
I think my onboard raid controller is a piece of crap.

Damn that speed is slow for a raptor! My 1TB drive is almost as good, a lot better for the burst speed!

Yeah that's because your samsung drive is SATA2 whereas the original raptors are SATA1.
Having them on a software RAID doesn't help either to be honest.

I think it's pointless to spend a large amount on high speed mechanical drives now. Intel will be releasing SSDs with vastly superior performance to current SSDs soon, and supposedly at reasonable prices.

I want to get a 1EB (exabyte) hard drive and store the internet on it :D
An exabyte is 1024 petabytes or 1048576 terabytes for those that didn't know ;)

And a terabyte should be roughly 1 thousand gbs

I might get a SSD one day, but I've been put off by the price. Although like everything else, they will go down eventually.

I just bought two 1.5TB HDD for 101$ a piece.
Yay. :P
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4138742
That drive, which was 150$ just the other day, and is listed as 119$ right now. But, with MSN's Live Cash Back, there's a 15% off deal, and I applied that to two drives on the site, which gives me basically a 36$ discount, making it $203.98 after shipping for both drives.
Pretty good deal right now.
I'm going to use one as a storage drive in my Server/Media Center, and use the other in one way or another to mirror or backup that drive. I haven't decided how yet. I was going to RAID them so it mirrors one to another, but I don't know much about that right now, as I've never set up a RAID. My understanding is that if one gets data corrupted, it would mirror to the other, resulting in corrupted data on both.
Also, it seems safer to keep the second drive in a different computer or in some way isolated from the other, just in case something odd, like a surge in power blows out all the drives in the computer, it doesn't happen in the other.
The drive appears to be fairly known for issues with 30 second delays in reading/writing, but Seagate released a firmware update fix for that yesterday, so it should be all good now.
And, if not, Seagate has the best warranty on it anyway, 5 years.
I had thought about buying the 1TB Samsung HDD that the OP had bought because it appeared to have good reviews, but then they downed the price on the Seagate. The Samsung (Both the 5400RPM and the 7200RPM) are both 95$, so there's only a 6 dollar difference really on them.
I was going to go with the 5400RPM Samsung because it runs cooler, uses 4 watts less, and may be quieter because of the spindle speed, but supposedly its quietness is similar to that of the 500GB Seagate, which I have, and is great, so I decided to go with it.

Eh, you always have to go one better than me don't you?! Mine spins at 7200rpm, but it's very quiet. It's a lot faster than my 80GB SATA drives, I'm very happy with it.
My extra 2gb RAM arrived today.. I'm on 4GB ram at last :D
This weekend I think I'll install Windows 7 (and Vista maybe) on my 1TB drive for some more speed hopefully.

Yep, that's how I do things. ;) :P
I hope the new one is as quiet as my 500GB Seagate.
Stupid TigerDirect apparently has my order status set to "backordered." Hopefully they'll get more in stock in the next day or so. They've relisted it as "In Stock" on their product page for it, but haven't updated my order status.
Oh, well, at least I'll get it in the next week or so. If it ships Monday, I should get it Tuesday.
I just need some actual storage space, and the ability to backup my data. I have NO backups right now, which is BAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaad. :P
It would be somewhat devastating if I lost all the data on my 500GB drive. Basically most of my collection of stuff back to 2001 or 2002.
I lost most of my stuff back in 2001 or so when my Primary drive at the time (a 15GB Maxtor, which was like 10 months old) went up in a cloud of smoke, literally.
So far, I've been lucky with my data, but I need to start keeping backups of it, which these two drives will allow me to do. I'll use one as a storage drive, and one as a backup of that drive.
I've been waiting for a good deal on HDDs for a few months now. :)
In both my Server/MMC and my Desktop, I have one smaller drive that acts as the Primary. Better idea than to use the 1.5TB as a primary. :P

I really need a back-up as my back-up has turned into what I use for storage lol!
I might get a 250gb drive (maybe a raptor or SSD) to use as a primary drive for the OS and programs/games.. one day!

Right now, I have my "Backup" stored in like 40 different places. :P
And, I don't have enough room to consolidate it all together. I want a place where I can just set up as a file server, then save a lot of the stuff to one place, then everything can be backed up every couple day or something, using incremental backups or something.
I'm using an SATA1 drive as my Primary drive in my Desktop instead of the SATA2 drive I have. I don't think it 's making a huge difference in performance (at least not noticeable) but I would like to move it onto something else.
