There will now be a "featured" member forum that is shown at the top of the forum index (and at the top of the member forum listing). For right now, there are no requirements for a member forum to become featured. We are simply rotating the forums on a daily basis.

Why are we doing this? Because we can, and we're hoping to see an increase in diary activity

Be sure to check out the featured forum everyday!

This is just my 2 cents but I thinking, you could make it so that the featured forum changes every time you refresh the page. It being just a random forum that way it gives ALL diaries a higher chance of being looked at.

I'm not saying you HAVE to change it, just saying what I think would be maybe better.

Anyone else?

I like it the way it is. One forum up there each day gets it more attention than what you're suggesting. What you're suggesting wouldn't help diary activity as much. Once we get more people involved in a diary, even after that diary is no longer the featured diary, people may still come back to that diary if they enjoyed checking it out. Plus, I'm not even sure if what you're requesting is possible.

No...it's fine. We have 30 something diaries. That means every diary will get it's day about once a month.

We haven't figured out a way for it to be changed randomly for any given time. For now it must be changed manually by an admin.

Wow that was fast O.O 2 minutes...

Hmm alright then I guess what I'm saying isn't possible...for now lol.

Yeah, I agree. It makes the diary more 'special' for that day and will bring more attention to it since it is always up there rather than a new member losing it because they wanted to check a PM or something first.

Yea, I noticed that you guys have to move the diary which can be a hassle :(

Hmm, also, if it changed each time someone viewed the forum index, it would also have to change each time someone viewed the member forums. Each time it changes, the forum have to be moved like John said. So if forums were moved every time the index or member forums were viewed, it would be incredibly stressful on the server.

In fact, because of the breadcrumbs, I think that this would actually be quite impossible. It's a whole lot more than just telling vBulletin to "show the featured forum!!!11" It has to do with moving a forum, updating the cache, and maintaining consistency for breadcrumbs. That would be practically impossible to do when trying to have a randomly generated featured forum.

I think it should be kept the way it is. Plus, the diary would get at least a whole day of face time, instead of randomly getting time, and the point of this was to increase diary traffic, so let the owners have their fun.

I think if the diary changed every time the page was refreshed then people would start ignoring it, ruining it's whole purpose. I think anyways.

I like the new addition though! Good job Kiros!

I was just reminded (somehow) of a movie involving Jamie Kennedy saying, "Don't call me a cab! You're a cab!"

Uh...couldn't you query the number of forums, call a random() and display a link and the title at the top rather than the actually forum? Meh, not that I'd want it that way. I think this is fine as is.

People would be a lot less likely to just click a simple link. You'd want to display a description with that title, which means we're back to where we started.

If it were that simple, would I be objecting the idea? ;)

There is no GetRandomForumObjectFromASpecificForumCategoryFunction(), and creating one would be insanely hard - especially since the only random functions return a single random number or character, which has almost no chance of matching up to a present forum ID or even a display order number. On another note, simply fetching the data (forum ID, title, description, read/unread status) and displaying it on the forum index would mean that the featured forum would not be able to be displayed how it is within the member forum listing. Unless you can write up the PHP code and templates to prove me wrong.
