I was just wondering, as I've heard this, if I have 2x512 mb and 1x1 gb will the latter work? (Ram, that is)

so your asking if you mix 2 512mb sticks with a 1gb stick will it still work?
if so, it should work, make sure your mothercoard supports that much RAM first though

I've found that in this case it's as many slots as your mobo has. Mine has four slots, so at the moment 4 gigs, but it's really only got 2; the mixture above. I checked in BIOS and it's picking it up so that means it must be working, right?

if the bios recognizes it then yes it is working
any motherboard can mix and match RAM sizes
example: 128MB + 128MB+ 256MB +512MB would work also

Yeah, except in the old days, you had to make sure you had exact, exponential bits in each bank... Now, it's a lot simpler because we have already-built sticks of RAM
