View Full Version : My philosophy on sex

What drives us to have sex?

So, I have begun to think about sex and the important role that it plays in our society. We can't forget that sex is also a killer! While it's not very common that one would die from sex, but sex causes things like. Your eyes to dialate, your breathing to become more rapid and more shallow, your blood pressure to sky rocket, your muscles to contracted as if they were lifting twice your body weight and all your glands to start releasing secretions. But what makes this dangerous act so gratifying and romantic?

Here's my position on it. Sex, is like a mind control device, it causes us to think irrationally and on impulses. While it is hormone driven the brain should be over powering hormones, but what makes them stronger than the human brain? That is a question for the ages, why are we so easily taken over by hormones. Well, one of my opinions is that, we coming from animals still contain some of our basic animal instincts. So after some reading, I found out that the human body does also give off pheromones, that are undetectable by smell by the olfactory lobe in your brain can pick them up.

Still that isn't the main reason why. We humans are attracted easily by what we see with our eyes, and hear with our ears. But what about those who aren't expierencing it physically? Well Sigmund Frued said that children start sexual thoughts as a baby, when they see their mother/father. So from what he said I believe that sex is just something that all people knew and know about through out their lives. Whether they have no clue what it is and what it's purpose is or whether they've had it. That is what I truely think about sex.

It's an animalistic drive...an instinct. I don't want to say sex is the point of life, because how people view sex isn't the point of life. Sex as procreation is basically the only reason we are here in my view. This view is kind of grim however...the whole purpose of life being to reproduce. I don't know...it really is something to think about. Nothing is really this simple, I'm sure there is more to it.

Well, yeah of course. We have to have sex; it's what keeps humans alive and away from extinction. We must have it implanted in our brain, so we can reproduce and keep the population alive and well.

Sex is something that is imprinted in the mind like who to be attracted to and what to do in a situaton. We do animalistic (if thats a word) things because we are animals. Primative, futuristic or present animals always carry on basic instincts. The fact that we can handle all in which the body is taking in and giving harldy anything out is the body way of survival. We handle weight on ourselves, sweat much, some people are nervous, were in thrusting motion or taking it and having short breath as Dizco Lemonade said. I dont think it our purpose in life to have sex but it is something that makes a human feel complete. Just as an animal must do something to be called that. Something our minds feel we must do and our body reacts.

I agree; it is a basic instinct. It's right up there with eating stuff when you're hungry, fighting or running away from scary stuff, drinking stuff when you're thirsty, and being better than everyone else so you can have more stuff. Of course, humanity also has the apparently unique ability to completely ignore basic instinct if they want it bad enough.

Sure, sex is an instinct. Just like when you eat or drink, your brain rewards you with chemicals that make you feel good (roughly put). But evolution made it so that we 'receive the reward' for both the act of sex (pleasure) and procreation (the pleasure of having a child, especially for mammal females :) ). So, we found a way to cheat nature : have sex, without reproduction.

Of course, humanity also has the apparently unique ability to completely ignore basic instinct if they want it bad enough.
I don't think we do. It's not about wanting, it's about needing. If you NEED to change them, you can. But there's nothing unique about it. So can many other animals.

We give ourselves too much credit. Life would be much simpler if we accepted that we are animals, and that we're not that smart (which doesn't mean giving up what we have and are, just understanding that we don't know sh*t). Let's look at an example : we keep dogs. we feed them, give them sanctuary, help them reproduce (we mate them). All they have to do in return, is look cute. So, who do you think is the smart one now? A dog or a human? Who can say with certainty that elephants haven't beaten us to the moon, but later decided that they want to lead a spiritual and simple life, without technology? Or that penguins aren't great mathematicians? The fact that we don't understand their communication doesn't mean they don't communicate. I'm just kidding of course, but you get the point. I still believe elephants were on the moon and that dogs are using us, though...

Freuds Oedipus and Electra Complexs are far from sold and reliable.
As far as sex itself goes, it is a natural drive which is complicated by the circumstances and psychologies of those involved.
It doesn't control or override anything in healthy humans. Humans are capable of overriding these impulses. You will only really find sexual instances where biology rules over everything else in rapists.

Your point? I've read the exact same thing in an psychology book too.

Why do you memorize quotes from House in the first place?

Wow good post Greg. I do see how sex is a major issue in our lives. Sex is every where, it is on TV, it is on Music videos, Movies etc... it is all over. Sex definitely sells.

Yes as humans we are driven by sex. It is a major part of our lives. Just look here for example. There are more post about sex and puberty than all of the other combined.

I think sex is a very special bond between two people. It can strengthen a marriage and it can ruin a marriage for the lack there of. I t can also ruin a relationship when a person cheats on another person.

The sex drive can be controlled and should be controlled by each individual. Sex should not be taken lightly. Sex should be special.

Sex for procreation is good.

I do agree with Jared. Why do you worry about House quotes when you can read all of this info in a good human sexuality text book.

Because I have a brain like a freakin' sponge. I memorize next to everything, basically involuntarily. Which is how I was top in year all through high school.

What drives us to have sex?
Simple answer, raw animal instinct. The idea of sex is to reproduce. So we don't all die out it is a nice act.

We are just animals at the end of the day. :)

Finally, someone gets my main idea! We are all animals we just try to act with manners but when all is said and done in the sack we are still animals!
