WESTFIELD, Massachusetts (AP) -- An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.

The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club, Police Lt. Lawrence Valliere said.

The boy was with a certified instructor and "was shooting the weapon down range when the force of the weapon made it travel up and back toward his head, where he suffered the injury," a police statement said. Police called it a "self-inflicted accidental shooting."

The victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he died. His name was not released.

Although the death appears to be an accident, police and the Hampden district attorney's office were investigating, officials said.

The club said on its Web site that the event, run in conjunction with C.O.P. Firearms and Training, is "all legal and fun." People will be allowed to fire weapons at vehicles, pumpkins and other targets, it said.

Officials with the private club and the firearms group could not be reached for comment. A message left on a club answering machine was not returned. The C.O.P. group's machine clicked off without taking a message.

The sportsman's club was founded in 1949 and describes itself on its Web site as an organization that promotes "the interest of legal sport with rod, gun, and bow and arrow, both directly and through training."

It has eight firing ranges as well as archery and fishing facilities located on 375 acres in Westfield, about 100 miles west of Boston.

my question is was it like almost immidate on the draw back or was it semi slow. cause if it was slow enough he should of let go of the trigger.

I understand he was with an instructor, who must have had some bizzare reason to feel the kid could handle it. I could also understand maybe allowing the kid to practice on something smaller, and keeping your hand on the gun with the kids to prevent injuries such as this. The force generated by the blast is simply too much for an 8 year-old to anticipate and overcome very easily, and it's not a chance one should take. Even if he wasn't shot, the gun could have whipped back and hit him in the head and still caused injury. And come on, an uzi?? If you don't give a kid a gun (and most don't), you don't give them a freakin submachine gun. I feel for the family, but crap... what were they thinking?

Mmm seriously.
Whats up with that?
There are always those dumb advertisements 'Lock up your guns so kids dont get to them'
I always think 'Wow, what parent would be that irresponsible? What kid that stupid?'
Yet people do stupid stuff like this...
And its freaking legal?

Beyond me.

Giving the kid a gun was stupid. Even if he had an instructor with him.

A FRUCKING UZI?!? WTF? That is to damn powerful for an 8Yo to control. Its sad that he died from it. but I think there are a few people that should take responsibility for it, his parents and the instructor

I can't really add much more than to ask why the child was allowed to handle a gun in the first place.
Since there isn't much that can be done, I hope people learn from this.

It's an Uzi, which is basically an automatic pistol; it fires at approximately 600 rounds per minute, so 10 rounds a second; with recoil like that, one second on the trigger could have killed the kid...Submachine guns are the hardest guns to control because of their small size and high rate of fire...that idiot that would give one to an eight year old deserves to go to jail.
