LONDON: Britain’s law-enforcement officials plan to carry out identity checks on people in the street through handheld fingerprint scanners in a hi-tech strategy to fight terrorism and crime.

Under the scheme, which has been named Project Midas, every police force is to be issued handheld fingerprint scanners that will allow officers to carry out identity checks on people in the street.

Fingerprints taken using the device will be compared against the national police database, which holds information on 7.5 million individuals.

To take fingerprints currently, officers have to take a suspect into custody suites.

The system may potentially beam images of suspects back to officers. It is thought the new technology, which could be in widespread use within 18 months, will transform the speed of criminal investigations in the country.

Is it even legal?
That would be against Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms (constitution)

I'm not even sure if that is really legal or not. It's something that i will have to look up about.
