So I was in class and my teacher was saying something about something being normal and that got me thinking, why do we have a norm? Whats the point of being normal, why should anyone be normal, and just so many other things. Why do you guys think we have a norm? Why is wearing a suit at a business meeting "formal"? Is it because its "normal" to wear a suit? What would happen if everyone in the world just started wearing shorts and a t-shirt to work, would that be the norm from then on? Whats the point of being normal? Would being normal be normal?

What are everyone's thoughts about this?

Nice teacher there.

Honestly, i don't think anyone has to be "normal".

I go against "normal", just to be abitch :P

The point of this is rather simple...
Humans are social, family-group creatures. Being part of a group [normal...] is natural... to most...
ybnormal?

What is normal is relative to personal opinion

Why do we have social norms? Well their just the relative things that a majority of people would consider ''normal''

And we have them because of the bad part of human nature to judge and brand others

Really, the only things that we would find 'normal' are things or others who do similar actions to ourselves. Because our way of living is the way we do it and anything else is slightly strange, and here's another word, wierd.

Anything, different to what we're used to will be strange to us but not necissarily to others. So other people might find something that we do strange or different because it's something they don't do.

Does that make sense? It's my view anyway.

Normal: 1. conforming to the standard or the common type; usual; not abnormal; regular; natural.

Normal is what everyone else is. Also I've heard normal: uncorrupted. makes me laugh

Personally, I will be who I am and I dont give a fuck who everyone else is.

We were JUST discussing social norms the other day in my sociology class.

Really, if we didn't have some of these norms set down, there would be no standard to follow, which would cause a little chaos. I'm not saying that they're a good thing, because I don't even believe that there is a 'normal', but having a standard helps to keep society somewhat regulated.

Oh course, nobody is 'normal'. We're human beings, not robots. It's just that the further away from ths standard that somebody deviates, the more 'weird' they seem. Nobody rides the 'normal' standard perfectly, we're all 'weird'.

theres no such thing as normal
Normal is a standardized median line that we all try to remain as close to as possible
like steph said
it regulates
its been there for all recorded history
the nail that sticks up is hammered down
and what-not

Amen to that! There is no such thing as normal, because we're all different. "Similar" is a better word to use because people can be alike, but they never will be the same.

Well normal is just someones perception of people thus no one can be normal because we all have different views.

Normal people have never fitted well in history. Anyone who brought about good for our nation was not normal. They were mavericks.

You have a good point. I think normal is what society says is the correct way. wow that is a really good question. you really got me thinking. i dont think there is really a normal though. like who is to define it!!

I know i've already replied, but i'd like to make the point that going to extremes to be different is no different than conforming in my eyes.

That's what I was going to say!
I mean, humans seem to have this subconscious need to put themselves and everyone else into little boxes. I don't know what this is about for sure but I think it may be because like with any other species, if something we see or experience is different than we're used to it often frightens us or makes us uneasy in some way. With creating a norm, we are creating our comfort.

Anyway, what is normal? It's whatever the majority are doing in the current moment. Normal changes over time. It was normal 60 years ago for the man to be in charge in a relationship but now it's said to be right that partners don't try to dominate eachother but instead, work together.
That's just one example but I think you get my point. There will always be a normal but never the same normal.
