Should we have a VT [email protected] team?

For those that don't know:

[email protected] is a distributed computing project -- people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. [email protected] uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.

[email protected] studies protein folding and misfolding:

What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

Basically you run a piece of software that you won't even notice it's there unless your computer is excessively underpowered.

If enough people decide to run it I'll setup the team.

ALSO: You may use multiple computers for your username. If you decide to run it, please post the system specs of whatever you're running it on. This gives us an idea of how much power we have on the team.

I'm confused as to what this accomplishes... Everyone gives some computer power to do what? What kind of projects? What exactly is the point?

Oh, right. Thought that little copy pasta from their site explained everything.

OP edited for clarity.

I was part of a team on another website, and ended up with a slight point lead.

I haven't participated since like May, though.

I don't think I'll be taking part in any teams anymore, at least not anytime soon.

Two more questions:

1) Do I have to do anything when the program is downloaded?

2) Does it work with Linux?

It'll ask some config questions. Things like username, team number, how much CPU and RAM it can use, etc.

Yes there's a linux client.

I'll make the team if enough people decide to go with it.

I used to run [email protected] on my ps3, I did about 100, 8 hour work units. Maybe I can run a few work units on the VT team on it. Also my desktop is pretty powerful, so I could run it on that too.
