Every significant Internet provider around the globe is currently in talks with access and content providers to transform the internet into a television-like medium: no more freedom, you pay for a small commercial package of sites you can visit and you'll have to pay for separate subscriptions for every site that's not in the package.

Almost all smaller websites/services will disappear over time and multinationals who are used to using big budgets to brute force their content into every media outlet will finally be able to approach the internet in the same way.

This well-known illustration of why we need net neutrality turns out to be very close to the truth

This isn't going to happen. AT this point there's just no way anybody is going to be able to get away with making you pay to view a "small package of sites".

People will lose traffic, a lot of it, because people won't want to pay for that. There are going to be many many sites still around that won't die out and won't let this happen. People like Google, with their ads which they make tons off of, aren't going to let it happen. If everyone did something like this, someone else would step up and probably make a new "internet" which you wouldn't have to pay for, as that would be a huge way to make profit if something like that happened.

I can guarantee you, it won't go like that.

Exactly. If they tried something like this, they would loose all but like 2 of their subscribers.

Bad business choice.

Google
Yahoo
Ask
Lycos
would all die

if you can only access a small amount of sites
there's no need for search engines

DarkWingedAngel
October 10th, 2008, 09:23 AM
exactly
i mean if you know the name of the site then you can go straight to it and not have to use a search engine

That sucks.
Thank god it's not going to happen.
That would be the worst business decision that they could make EVER.
So many people would be pissed off and well...they just wouldn't do it would they?

Exactly what I was about to say.
And they won't let it happen.
If by chance they do, Google would become a Internet service provider, like the ones today.

^^ If this were to happen, any way of bypassing it would be EXTREMELY illegal, but this isn't going to happen, so there's no reason to even bother thinking about ways to get around it...

But guys, it is sort of starting with iSP BELL Canada.
They have very strict bandwidth allowences, you have to pay for basicly everything you do on the internet, Gaming, downloads, and browsing.

well if the internet providers required us to pay money for a small package of websites, being retarded people(just like music critics), they would have specific websites picked out for you. like the star choice education package with national geographic, the military channel, animal planet, etc. and then, we'd get Yahoo and Msn.com. both websites of which i have no buisness going there(MSN is my homepage however.) and it would cost alot of money to try to find VT on there.
