I have too many ^__^
but I'll name a few

Disturbed - their lyrics guide me through a lot of situations and they're meaningful.
Slipknot - forever and ever and ever!<3
Killswitch Engage - their lyrics are good and on a whole they're awesome.

Well, the bands I listed would fall into Alternative Metal mostly (my favourite kind). As I'm not really into death metal, black metal, thrash metal etc.

Disturbed is good, but I have to say Metallica, since they basically created metal.

Metallica FTW!!!!

Helloween, baby. :D Alestorm, Moonsorrow, Dir en Grey (J-rock can be metal, right?), System of a Down...

And Nightwish if they count. But I don't really like the new girl - old singer was better, IMHO. Or rather, I preferred her style of singing.

Yeah the old singer was a lot better, had a more operatic voice that went better with the sound of the band.

Daaaamn. There's too many. Rep to anybody who has heard of at least five of these...

Blind Guardian, Demons and Wizards, Dezperadoz, Green Carnation, Dark Moor, Apocalyptica (sort-of?), Therion, Thaurorod, Pyramaze, Orphaned Land, Lake of Tears, Silentium, Madder Mortem, At Vance...

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

And Nightwish if they count. But I don't really like the new girl - old singer was better, IMHO. Or rather, I preferred her style of singing.

Yes, xGreenling, Nightwish counts. It's symphonic metal. Look up all the subgenres of metal, there are a lot. ^^

I've heard of Dark Moor, Therion, Silentium, Apocalyptica. Ahh that's 4 bands :P lol
I've never actually listened to any of their music though, (I've heard like one of Apocalptica's songs). I've only heard them being mentioned on peoples myspace profiles as such.
What sort of metal actually are they?

Gothic is okay if you get past the sappy lyrics. Power metal is awesome but I can't blame those who don't like it... As for black metal, I have to agree with you, it's horrible. : <

...And to be honest, I had to look half of them up, because I couldn't classify them myself. xD

Pope Sweet Jesus. thats shocking.

I love Dir En Grey :O

Oh and also, has anyone heard of Children Of Bodom?
Like when I was going through this heavy metal stage, they were all that I would listen to. As well as Trivium, but they kinda suck ¬__¬ But at that time my favorite band was H.I.M. and I still like them but personally I would never consider them metal at all, even though some people do.

I actually used to listen to a lot of good metal bands. I've heard of most of them as well.

Disturbed no longer considered themselves metal, they are Hard Rock now. However, it's the closest thing to metal I care for, so Disturbed.

Does NDH (Neue Deutsche Härte) counts? If yes...

-Eisbrecher
-Megaherz
-Oomph!
-Rammstein
-Unheilig

I don't really like more North American metal, to be honest...I understand German quite well so lyrics aren't generally a problem for me, so NDH is very enjoyable...I just like how the Germans do it better :P

Most jrock make my ear bleed. What's with the Japanese and nasal vocals?

Although im not particularly educated on genres so forgive me if i completely screw up what i say. Its just my opinion but in the end im just in it for the actual music but ill gladly listen to any advice on categorising bands into genres. Atreyu are pretty sweet *Becoming The Bull* *Doomsday*

Moonsorrow is definitely one of the best.

It's very heavy folk metal.

I also really like Korpiklaani, Ajattara, and Ensiferum.

And for those of you who like Dir en Grey, I suggest you see them live. I saw them live in NYC in...2006...I think. They put on a great show even though we couldn't always tell what they were saying and vice versa. It was close to my birthday too so I got VIP seats and an autographed poster by the entire band. =)

im sorry bro, im a die hard rocker, metallica didnt basically create metal.. such an ignorant statement.. what about the bands who inspired them to being rockers? there are several interviews from the early 80s of metallicas band members, and the one band i hear the most from there mouths would be motorhead.. metallicas old shit kicked ass, but they have lost it, and now they are just as pathetic as all these other money hungry bands..

sorry, this is just my opinion..
