Jesus christ i am pissed! my 2 best friends left me because i smoke. i am not addicted, i just smoke every now and then to calm me down with enough time for the nicotine to flush out of my system so i don't get addicted. but they think i am addicted and they think that i smoke like 14 packs a day or somthing. Jesus christ, i never smoke around them or anything, and i would not ever give them any. they're like sports nerds. they do the same thing all the time. go biking, play hockey or somthing really boring. they have no clue how to have fun as a teenager. i only smoke around my friends in grade 9 and 10 anyways. grow up would ya?! your in high school now, who cares if sombody smokes. Sterotypical assholes.
i really had to vent.

Some people are really offended and dislike people who smoke, and you're going to have to accept that. I know I wouldn't have a friend that smokes (no offense) even only a little bit. Just move on from them if they're being like that, and maybe they aren't suitable friends if they left you for that reason.

Hey, settle down buddy. You might feel bad about it, but if you're saying that smoking occasionally is the only way to have fun as a teenager, you are wrong. First of all, if they are athletes, then not smoking is a good decision. You really should try to stop smoking.

yes. but theres only one problem. i have to go to school, and almost the entire grade (38 kids, small school) are like them: "innocent"
thats the troubles with mainlanders. they don't do what i do.(im newfie) if i need to get a bottle of Newfie Screech(http://www.screechrum.com/story.asp) and screech them in, id do it.
also, since this is a small town, almost everybody has at least tried smoking, exept for the lovely crowd in my grade. the only ones who would care. this is gonna be a long year

Well, you might just have to accept that the people there are like that. If you have to, don't let anybody know you smoke, or just give it up, as it will be less expensive and more healthy.
You can't change what others think, so it's going to be hard to keep this from happening in a place where everyone is "innocent".

i know that people are like that, but they saw me smoking with some other friends, i smoked 3 that day. thats the most ive ever smoked in one month before. i quit cold turkey on thursday after going home at 8:00. and i got sick on friday so i don't know weather it was withdrawal symtoms or the flu. and i just steals smokes from my mother when she buys the cartons.

smoking and drinking are the only real fun things to do in a town of 500. also, i stopped cold turkey on thursday already. but i had the flu that day too. so i don't know if i was addicted or not. also, my friends are like the great equilizer for me. the mainland has changed me from what i was back on the rock. they were the things that would have kept me away from pot (not saying i will) and (most) drinking.

and also, the reason they left me, is because they say me walking home from up town, and they asked what i was doing up town. so them, being as stunned as they are, dicided that i was smoking. and one of them reached down and touched my pants pocket, where there was a box shape. they dicided that it was a pack of smokes and biked away, shortly after calling me a fag and a dirty hoe. what it was, was a cell phone. real smart guys.

I know what you mean...I'm from a town that size...There were only like a handful of high school kids who smoked though, because everyone thought it was disgusting.
The only thing kids ever did in my town was drink...except the major athletes, because they knew if they got caught, that would be the end of football and basketball for them.

Well to be honest here, if you friends are like that then they are not good friends. They should be able to accept for who you are. I had the same thing happen to me when I came out to my friends who are Jocks too. Jocks have a different attitude they have to be careful because they are judged more harshly. Give your freinds some time if they are friends they will understand and come around. If they don't then they were not good friends after all.

I agree with your frustration about your friends not being understanding about your smoking habit as it is hardly a morally wrong thing to do. I think that societal impressions towards smoking have really made smoking look like something terrible, and smoking is no doubt out of vogue unlike a previous era when smoking was viewed as something essential. At the risk of sounding naive, maybe your friends are really worried about your smoking and feel that by using "tough love" on you that you will somehow quit smoking? In the end of the day it is your choice what you want to do, and out of respect towards your friends I would avoid smoking around them so that you don't cause friction. However, I would let your friends know that the way they are handling your smoking habit really is over-the-top, and that all because you smoke does not make you evil or less of a person. You need to tell your friends that their imposing their values upon you is not right and that you all should still be friends with each of you respecting each other.
On a side note, life for smokers is becoming increasingly difficult, and it really is not worth smoking anymore. I am not sure how things work in Canada, but in America whenever the government is short on cash the first thing that is done is to increase taxes on tobacco and alcohol. Also, there are so many places nowadays that have banned smoking, be it bars and restaurants, that smokers are finding fewer and fewer places to light up. At some workplaces employees are forced to go into their cars and smoke and are no longer provided a smoker's lounge on company property. I have even heard of stories of some apartment buildings owners who ban smoking in individual units. Basically, if you can stop smoking now, then you can really avoid a ton of hassles in terms of finances and having the ability to smoke later on in life as I believe things are only going to get more difficult for smokers.
With your living in a small town I can totally understand how boredom can set in. However, just don't turn to artificial substances for a "good time" as such highs are only temporary and are not based in reality. Do your best to try to find productive things to do (which can be easier said than done in a rural place). You especially don't want to get into alcohol if you are still in puberty and growing as you don't want to stunt your growth either physically or mentally.

You smoke and you're in high school? wow. I've heard of schools like that. I'm kind of sheltered, I've always gone to private school.

Umm. Wow.
ok
Well first off your reasons are very skewed on why you should be smoking. Smoking is not what you should be wasting your time on. I personally think it is a disgusting habit and extremely unattractive. However, all opinions aside statistically smoking is something you shouldn't be doing if you care about your health and your social life and plus it is illegal. So you shouldn't be smoking anyways.
Then you stated that you are smoking because you are "bored" and you live in a small town and it is fun. Whatever, it is not fun. I don't see how putting smoke in your lungs is fun. It 'calms' you down? Sure whatever but there are people that die everyday from smoke inhalation so maybe you should think about what you are actually physically doing to your body. Anyways, turning to drugs for fun isn't something that you should be doing.
It also seems as if you don't know how to handle it. You say you are not addicted but then you say you don't know. You can get addicted with just a few cigarettes. Having nicotine 'flush' out of your system doesn't do anything. I am not sure where you got that but it is not true.
Me personally, if I new that a friend smoked I would try to avoid them. Like I said I think its a horrible habit, its illegal for a reason, its disgusting among other reasons. I understand where your friends are coming from. I think the didn't handle the situation properly though. They should have talked to you about it and asked you questions about it and stuff. So I understand where you are coming from in that sense.
However, when you were saying that they are "sports nerds" that is completely irrelevant. They are physically active (in which you should be) and they are keeping their body healthy. Smoking doesn't do that. I hope you don't play any sports especailly like Soccer and Cross Country because that would be a horribly choice. It would be a bad choice for them if they smoked and were in sports too.
The solution? I think maybe you should consider stop smoking and drinking and then talk to them, tell them you stopped and have your friends back. If you don't want to to give up these activites for your friends back then I guess you need to find 'friends' in the people that do this too. I think the earlier choice is best though...
Good luck. Hope I helped :D

Well it is your choice to smoke or not. It is very clear that your friends do care and don't want you to smoke. Smoking is not healthy even if you don't inhale the smoke into your lungs the second hand smoke it actually worse than the smoke that goes through the filter and you bring into your body.
It is hard but find new friends to hang out so are not tempted to smoke. Get some will power and it is good that you have smoked for two weeks.

I love opinions like this. That are based on no particular reason other than what the person has done.
