A teenager has plunged more than 15m to his death as others below urged him to jump and then took photos of his dead body.

Shaun Dykes, 17, committed suicide from the top level of a shopping centre carpark in the English regional centre of Derby yesterday after police tried to coax him away from the edge, the Daily Mail has reported.

But a group of onlookers below shouted encouragement at him over the three hour ordeal, according to police and witnesses.

"How far can you bounce?" one allegedly shouted as others told him to "Jump" and "Get on with it".

Police slammed the youths' behaviour as "a shocking reflection on society".

"People were at the police cordon shouting for the man to jump," Superintendent Andy Hough, from Derbyshire police was quoted as saying.

"We really need the public to work with us, not against us. It was a very disappointing situation."

But one witness said while most people were screaming and crying, further disturbing behaviour followed.

"There were several groups of youths who ran from behind the cordon and looked like they were taking pictures with their mobile phones," she was quoted as saying.

Mr Dykes allegedly suffered from depression and had recently been struggling with a relationship break-up.

Ironically, his MySpace page said he wanted to die "quietly" when the time came.

His best friend, Lindsey Reid, said he was joker who "smiled all the time and everyone knew him because he was so popular".

This reminds me of the story of the woman who convinced a teenage guy to kill himself because he was a bully.

Okay I stopped reading the second I read "over the 3hr ordeal"

The "onlookers" should have been subdued by SWAT
And arrested for disturbing the peace, disobeying a peace officer, etc....
Not to mention beaten with phone books (no marks)

I believe someone can actually be charged (at least in the States) for directly causing someone to commit suicide.

But yeah, that is just, WOW. I can't believe there are people like that in this world. They shouldn't be beaten with bats or with phone books, they should be forced to work in Tunisian POW camps.

In the USA, people can get charged with accomplice to suicide... or it might be homocide... bullies have been charged with homicide for pushing people to suicide.

I'm disgusted.
You don't make somebody feel coerced into going through with the deed,
It's just not right.
They deserved a little more than getting brutally beaten with phone books.

Phone books don't leave any marks ;)

Anyways, that's just sickening. I'm surprised the psychologists aren't more worried about the people who watched/cheered him to his death than the guy himself.

Yeah, that is awful. Quite disturbing how people could encourage that. :(

Who would use someones pain just to get something interesting to happen!

I agree they should be beaten with something, but why would you know want to leave marks on them. I would want to leave at least one permanent mark, So they can look back on it remember what they did.

EDIT: Ahh.. I just read that back, I was a bit angry.

Why didnt the police on-site remove the people urging the guy to commit suicide? And yes, it is extremely low to encourage somebody to take their own life.

I think the police should've dealt with this better... without the other people there there's a chance the outcome of the whole situation could have been different. Maybe not, but the way those people acted is absolutely horrible.
