Yes i agree. It has it flaws and goods and since the update came out it has gotten a lot better. At first i hated vista and i was stubborn to try it again but i gave it another shot and i like it. And the only reason i hated vista is because there were story's about it ruin iPods but they fixed that by releasing i tunes for vista. And the graphics in vista are amazing like this AERO thingy. But the bad thing is that it uses a lot more ram then xp.

What's wrong with Vista?

Really, it depends on the User's needs, desires, and personal experience with it.

Same as with any OS.

Some people find it to be very nice. Others absolutely hate it.

Also, as with ANY new Operating System, it'll be buggy.

Vista was no exception. And, neither was XP when it was first released. XP (prior to SP2) was a huge POS, riddled with bugs.

Someone could easily exploit a bug in XP that would allow them to turn your computer off.

There were MANY other things. But, that's one problem I remember quite well.

From SP2 and on, XP has been a very good OS for me.

Now, with Vista, I alpha and beta tested it, and absolutely hated it.

I tried it right after the initial release, and hated it.

I tried it after SP1's release, and hated it.

Then, I decided to try the 64-bit version of Vista instead of the 32-bit.

It was like night and day, stability-wise for a lot of things.

I've had FAR less issues with x64 Vista than the 32-bit counterpart.

The 32-bit was unusable, as far as I was concerned.

Besides the bugginess of Vista 32, I also disliked the random changes that MS made to the location of various settings and tasks in Vista over previous versions.

They moved pretty much anything and everything they could think of to an entirely different place, or added 3-4 more steps that you had to go through to get to a point that would have taken much less effort before.

Basically, someone who had XP and previous versions of Windows Memorized would find them selves somewhat confused by where things were in Vista.

Somewhat Aggravating. A lot of the changes appear to have no real purpose behind their changes.

My Two major issues with Vista were the cosmetic changes and the stability problems.

When I was finally able to get a hold of a copy of x64 Vista SP1 a few months ago, it changed my view on the subject fairly dramatically.

I was also put into a bind. I built a new computer, with 4GB of RAM, then decided to upgrade to 8, because I was maxing it out often.

Problem with both, is that 32bit XP, which I was using at the time, doesn't support more than 4GB of addressable Memory, and that includes hardware addresses, so most computers would only end up seeing 3-3.35GB of RAM in Windows that was usable.

So, I tried XP x64. It was ridiculously slow, and was too buggy. Even more so than Vista.

I couldn't take it because it kept BSODing or just generally being aggravating.

I tried x64 Vista, had FAR less issues with stability than 32bit Vista.

I've had a few issues here and there with it since, but nothing MAJOR.

I just had to learn to get used to the cosmetic changes, or change some of the things around as best as I could to make it how "it should be."

Basically, my opinion in a nutshell:

Vista 32-bit - Useless POS.
Vista 64-bit - Usable, and Fairly stable.

I now use Vista 64 on three of my computers. My Desktop, my Laptop, and my HTPC. Main reason I use it on my HTPC is because of the Media Center, but also the fact that all of my Main computers now have 4GB or more RAM.

Everyone's experience with it will be different.

Every OS has its issues. You can't satisfy everyone.

And, really, Vista does have some issues. I'm not saying it doesn't by any stretch of the imagination, and will still continue to advise against anyone using the 32-bit version of Vista.

But, what you have to realize is that even XP, which is considered by what I feel is safe to say the vast majority of people as the most stable and most successful version of Windows to this date, was ridiculously buggy and broken when it first came out, even for a few years afterward. It wasn't until SP2 that it was really worth my time, and I refused to even use it even on the side until around the time SP2 came out because of the problems.

People may mention compatibility issues with Vista and old programs. Which, is true, some programs dislike Vista. Updates to Vista and/or the Software in question a lot of times fix that.

But, take a look at a large percentage of software, especially games for computers that came with Windows 9x or Dos. XP Flat out refuses to run some of them, OR, they are very difficult to make run. In most cases, you can make them work, but it's annoying at times.

Some work just fine, but in my experience, it does get aggravating.

Same can go with pretty much any version of Windows, Linux, OSx, or any other type of OS or program released.

And the graphics in vista are amazing like this AERO thingy. But the bad thing is that it uses a lot more ram then xp.

Search on Google or Youtube for Beryl or Compiz or CompizFusion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpCLrC0tiPA

Similar to Aero, but for Linux, and a LOT more sophisticated, and puts it to shame.

That video by no means shows all the features.

And thus ends my biased, yet somewhat unbiased post. :P

you see, microsoft was like a game for a movie. it releases it too soon at the price of quality to cash in on the hype. only this time it was a computer system, and the hype was Mac's new Operating system. microsoft's attempts to catch up with the mac's sleekness(flowing animation and such) that it left quality in the dust waiting to catch up and to create more competition for the mac. so the first versions of vista were depressingly bad. but the quality has increased a bit now that the hardware is starting to catch up. i personally don't like vista still, because i don't understand how to use it. and its too dark for me. Xp is bright and cheery, with the bright blue and green toolbar on the bottom. but vista is dark blue. i don't like it. and its strayed away from the simplicity of windows XP/98/2000 etc.

You can change the look and themes of Vista.

http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/skins/vistautil/visstyles/?order=9&alltime=yes

You'll need to patch some system files, but I'm not entirely sure what is all required for that, as I haven't really messed with doing this with Vista too much.

Supposedly, you can follow these:

Manual Patching: http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=16977

Automatic Patching: http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=18027

Otherwise, you can just change the colors of the existing theme in the Display Settings.

Vista does have some simplicity to it, but it's in a different way than a lot of people are used to with previous versions of Windows. Some of it IS more difficult, though, Obviously.

To a new Windows user, who hadn't used anything before Vista, it may seem easier then if they had started with a previous versions of Windows. But, to a person who is used to how it was setup in previous versions, it may seem like a shot in the arm.

I've nulled it out because you shouldn't get negative reputation for stating your opinion. But remember, you still don't have a very good reputation because of a certain thread you posted within the past few days.

They need to develop something like Bootvis but for Vista x64. I'm trying to figure out why my Desktop's Vista install takes so long to boot up, even after removing pretty much everything nonessential from startup. My Laptop which is of lower specs takes quite a bit less time to start than my Desktop does.

I had someone do something (somewhat) similar to me about 2 weeks ago. :P

Although it was somewhat more about them being mad at others and I happened to come in at a bad time and misinterpreted part of one of their posts...

Yeah that's one of the main reasons I don't like Vista, the pointless moving around of things and extre steps it takes to get somewhere like task manager or network connections or something.

Task manager is one of the easy ones, though.

Yeah I know that, but what I'm saying is.. for those less knowledgeable about computers, will hit Ctrl + Alt + Del and expect to see task manager straight away, and may not even know that it is called task manager lol.

I have to say I love XP but wouldn't get caught dead using vista. Yeah it's got all these new features and such, but XP had it all. So I prefer XP, I still love microsoft though :).

Control+ALT+Delete
it dosn't let you end programs anymore, it just says everything that i don't want it to say. i really with HP would make a computer that actually runs on XP

Personally, i dont' have a problem with it.
I have a problem that Windows decide to create a new one, they didn't need to, and the fact that they decided to change it so much. That is annoying.
But i dont' have a problem with it. Yet.
