XP Is all I can remember
It sucks though. :P
Hopefully I'll have Vista soon and it'll be better. Doubtful, but maybe.

XP, it's had a good 6 year run on my Mom's computer and still works top notch.
I have Vista on my laptop and it sucks.

I'll have to go for XP. It was a massive advance from previous versions, and although not perfect it works well.
I'm hoping Windows 7 is going to be good, but I'm not getting my hopes up too much yet.

Crap, I hit the wrong button. Meant to hit XP, but hit 2000. Ah well.
I agree. XP rocks. Vista sucks.

Why did you list Windows 1.x but not Windows 2.x or 3.x? You're far more likely to have used 3.x over 1.x. :P
Although, back to the question, XP (Sp3) Would be my choice version of Windows.
SP2 for XP worked fine, but SP1 and SP0 (RTM/No Service Pack) sucked. :P
Windows 2000 is okay, and Windows 98SE is okay IF you hack the crap out of the OS with unofficial Patches/upgrades, and you don't expect it to be even close to as stable as XP, since it's based off an entirely different and less stable Kernel.
Vista (SP1) is fine, IF you use the 64bit version. It's a bit buggy still, but it's HANDS DOWN better than the 32bit version.
I won't touch the 32bit version of Vista. Period.

I have to agree, XP RTM wasn't very good, SP3 is much much better. And I'm not installing Vista again I don't think.

I pretty much refused to transition from Windows 2000 to XP until around the time of SP2 because it was pretty bad.

I went from 98 to XP so didn't really care! I did have Windows ME for a while but went back to 98 before buying a new computer with XP pre-installed.
That computer cost nearly $3000. AMD Athlon 1.5GHz. 256mb ram. GeForce 2 64mb graphics. 40gb Hard drive. That was an immense computer 7 years ago!

Haha. Yeah, I went from Windows 3.1 -> Windows 95 -> Windows 98FE -> Windows 98SE -> Windows ME -> Windows 98SE -> Windows 2000 -> Windows XP -> Windows 2003 -> Windows XP -> Vista 32 -> Windows XP -> Windows XP x64 -> Vista x64.
Well, that's a somewhat accurate progression. :P It was something like that. That's a progression of my Main OS only.
I have an old Compaq 286 (12MHz, 20MB Hdd, 14LBS) Laptop that originally cost almost 6000$.
Yay for product depreciation. :P
I got it for free, though, so meh.

On that subject, everyone has to have themselves a Windows 3.11 Live CD, with old Dos Games on it.
Comes in handy sometimes. Mainly just for the sake of having it.
A Windows 1.01 "Live" Floppy is also nice too.

what i find best to use is mac OS x but since my attempts to install it on my computer failed i will stick with vista. Vista is a very decent operating system but the main flaw is the lac of support for old printers and network adapters and stuff like that.

you can only install the Mac operating system on mac computers. i believe partly because the keyboard is different.

Yeah, I've looked on eBay once for it, but it was just a passing look.
They're relatively rare on ebay too.

With a hacked Install Disc, yes, but not with the original disc.
And, it's completely against the EULA.

Well it is called the drivers, which is the same reason you can install windows onto a mac you just have to updated the drivers. . .
Btw i voted Other cause I use Mac OS X Leopard :D
But I am sure you have heard of a 'hackintosh' it is where people download mac os onto a windows laptop. It is called a hackintosh because it is extremely illegal!
Here is why:
windows owns only the Operating system, they do not make their own computers so they must freely distribute it to whoever will use it
whereas apple makes their own laptops, so they own the sole proprietary rights to their OS to run only on their computers. So it would be a violation of copywright to put mac OS X onto your compaq, dell, etc. whereas since windows relies on this to make money it is perfectly legal as long as you own the disk!

Well it is called the drivers, which is the same reason you can install windows onto a mac you just have to updated the drivers. .
It's partially the drivers, but it's also the Kernel of the OS that didn't know how to handle Non-Macs. OSx relies on EFI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensible_Firmware_Interface), which Macs use, instead of BIOS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS) like PCs use.
At first, the hacked OSx Installs used hacked kernels that allowed the OS to bypass the EFI requirement. Now, it uses some type of EFI Emulation to trick the OS into thinking it has EFI, and thus allowing you to install it on some Normal PCs.
