Who does everyone here think won the first debate? And why?

------------------

Personally, I think Obama won. Obama really out-argued McCain with respect to the economy. While McCain was better on foreign policy, he didn't beat Obama by cvery much on that section and so loses overall. Obama also called McCain out on Iraq and linked him to GWB as much as possible, which he needed to.

First of all wasn't the debate supposed to be about foreign policy? I find smearing McCain by linking him to George Bush slightly appalling, nothing i didn't expect from obama though :yeah:

In light of the massive financial crisis currently occurring, an economic portion was added to the debate to take advantage of the timing.

McCain won this one, in my opinion,
Obama totally tanked the debate.
I may sound knit-picky,
But...

- He kept on interupting McCain in mid-sentence saying "That's not right..."
- He kept on talking like he had rehearsed for the debate
- He couldn't look at the audience and make eye-contact, he kept on looking down
- At one point, the audience laughed AT him, not with him.
- "Um..." and "Uh..." are BIG no no's, and he did it over and over.
- He said, "I agree..." to McCain like 13 times practically
- McCain wants to cut foreign aid and government spending
- McCain stayed consistent with what he says and what he does whereas Obama says what people want to hear

And my friend Tim swears up and down that Obama called McCain 'Tom' at some point during the debate. Even my sister, who is all for Obama, thinks that McCain has this one won by a landslide.

Obama. He was on, and most importantly, he kept it cool.

McCain just couldn't compare. He wasn't eloquent, he was disjointed and sloppy, he mispronounced Ahmadinejad's name, Obama landed two very good punches on the "bomb bomb bomb Iran" front, and also nabbed McCain on the soldier's bracelet.

McCain didn't focus on the issues. Sure, Obama could have done better, pointing out how McCain flip-flopped on torture, when he talked about it. And sure, he could have hit McCain hard on his blatant lie that his campaign manager took no money from Freddie Mac. But either way, Obama was stronger.

I think that any debate where the point of Obama being "acceptable" or not is moot is a win for him.

Other than that, I thought it was about a tie. Both did well enough.

I thought it was a tie Obama killed in the Economy Portion and McCain was great in Foreign Policies.

They both did pretty good, but the reason I said McCain is because he answered the questions directly and Obama seemed to dodge the question and not give a straight answer.
I also felt he got off subject a lot and ending up just criticizing the other party of everything that was wrong.
