ok...so last week, i got a concussion. the day after i went to school and talked to my AP bio teacher and told him what had happened. he was really cool about it unlike other teachers and gave me extensions on my work and everything. he even let me retake all my quizzes from this past week.

tomorrow we have our unit one test which is on like the first 5 chapters of the book. he was willing to give me an extra day to study and let me take the test on like thursday or something. i told him that i would just take the test tomorrow with the rest of the class. i want to take the test even though i know im not going to do well since i missed like 2 days. regardless of when i take the test, i dont get a retake.

should i have just taken the extra day to study?? i know it would be the smart thing to do but i feel like i would be taking advantage of the teachers kindness.

If you honestly need the extra time, take it. You're not taking advantage of the teacher; you missed class due to a serious injury and he's trying to help you succeed by allowing you some time to catch up with the rest of the class. Show him you appreciate it by using the extra study time to get a better grade. There's no need to punish yourself for missing class when the teacher is willing to work it out.

Also, in my experience, AP classes move really fast. If you take the test with the class before you're ready, you'll move right on to the next chapter without having had the time to fully understand the previous work. Taking time to study means you understand what you've learned, and you're better prepared to move on to whatever comes next, which could lead to a better overall grade.

In light of your test being tommorrow there really is nothing you can do at this point to exercise your option to take the test one day later. My guess is that had you decided to take the test later, then your teacher would have probably made a different test for you so that you would not be at an unfair advantage by inadvertantly hearing about what was asked in the test from other students. At this point you should take the test as backing out at the last minute is going to look bad.

I would say that in the future if you know for a fact that you are behind and need extra time to catch up on your work overall, then you should take the extension given to you. However, only take extensions when they are necessary, and only you know when you need extensions or not.

It's nice to see you have AP morals, too.

The answer to your q is that the decision should be based on how you feel and what you think your needs here are, not on some (honorable but) vague sense of duty. The purpose of a test is to accurately measure your knowledge, and if your injury prevents that, if it interferes with the test accurately reflecting your knowledge, if it measures the extent of your injury instead, then you should have waited. If not, if you were at 100% efficiency, then you should have taken it. But, both decisions should have been based on how you felt physically and what you needed, how accurate a reflection the grade would have been at it's intended purpose of measuring your smarts, not *other* conscience related issues.
