We can't force them as Nick said. It's obvious that new members don't read the rules. Just ignore them. They aren't bothering you so don't bother them

If it's a problematic post then just report it, otherwise let them get on with what they're doing.

I admit to only reading the rules when I became a mod :P
We can't force 'em to read the rules... But maybe we could get something done to make them more rule-concious....? I have no ideas.

This saying springs to mind: "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink"
We can give them the rules left, right and center. But there isn't a way that we can make sure that they read the rules that is more effective than the one in place already.

yep, agreed. no matter what you do, you can't make people read stuff. e.g. when i go to the football it has on the back of the ticket in small print, the terms and conditions of entry to the stadium. is that the first thing i look at? of course not. i look at my seat number. do i ever read the terms and conditions? no. so no matter what you do, you can't make people read the rules. but here on vt, its expected that you follow all the rules, so if you don't read them and break one, then you should expect to cop the consequences of such an action.

They never read rules and never will read rules. The rules are there so that is people break them, the admins/mods have a reason to punish them.

We could make a test on the rules that everyone has to pass before they can post...I'm pretty much just kidding about that, but still it's not a horrible idea.
But yeah, I guess we can't make them read the rules...I did of course, the second after I joined.

You could make a quiz on the rules they have to pass before becoming a member... but that would just scare people away.
I don't think there's any way to deal with this.

We should make a test on the rules that everyone has to pass before they can register...I'm pretty sure this is the best idea ever suggested to the site.
Curse me and my need to work and lack of ability to beat you an' Rex to this. Of course, I edited your quote to show truthliness.

You could do one of those like, "license of terms of agreement" things that pop up when you download software. Like, have a page during the registration process so that they must check they read it. And if they check that box, and break it multiple times, BOOM.
And really, most new people only do it once.

I used to complain about the same thing on another site, but then someone brought to my attention that the old threads to you are new threads to the new members, some of them don't realize it's an old thread. Not everyone looks at the dates before posting.
I admit to not having read the rules yet, but I read around a bunch before posting and got a feel for what I can and cannot do.

I agree, the rules look a little daunting.
It should be like "Use common sense and you will do fine...for the most part"
Anyways, umm yeah there is a hack that forces users to read rules...well actually its more like forcing the user to view the rules page for a given amount of time but someone can just sit there for 20 seconds waiting for them to be able to move on and not do anyhting.
Anyways, it happens, people don't always read the rules and people don't always follow the rules hence the creation of a moderator.

That is why in the intro forum, people tell new members to read the rules, and the FAQ's.

Well, we can't make them. We do have a lot of mods anyway, personally, I don't think it is a big deal.

I think that there was a feature on vB 3.7 that allowed moderators to actually have an option which forces a user to read the guidlines/rules. I could be wrong though.

That's not in default vB and no program can force someone to actually read it.

Sure, just make a test like we said. If you ask the right questions, they'll have to search a bit. Of course, I wouldn't join if I had to take a 15-question test on rules I don't want to follow.
I mean...

A quiz or test would not be a good idea as it would drive people away. People don't want to take over a few minutes to register to a site. I, personally, would turn away immediately if I was faced with that.

How about we just do what we always do. Suggest the FAQs and Rules and if they don't read them. Let them get in trouble because they had an opportunity to it.

You are making abosolutly no sense.
Point is: you can't force people to read the rules. You can support it and hope that they do. If they break a rule, they will learn a lesson. If they don't, it's not hurting anyone.

So are the massive amounts of threads complaining about unimportant things. But of course, we have those, so why not have a test? According to the new V.T. logic, overkill is "in."

I hope you guys were kidding about not allowing registration.
Then the forums would be useless, no one but current members who usually have their questions answered, would be making threads.
But I agree with John
Its not like there has been a huge spike in rule breaking, and VT has lived this way for years. Dont fix what isn't broken
