This post is related to puberty, as well as mental illneses, so thats why I've put it here. I've got a friend who has all the symptoms of mild terrets (tension-relieving ticks, occaisonal urge to swear, slight ocd.) I'm just wondering of any of this has got to do with puberty. He is 14, and no where near fully developed.

Could it be related to puberty? Yes. With people developing so rapidly like we do, hormones are going NUTS. This takes the obvious physical reactions and also several mental maturities. A lot of teenagers experience depression and anxiety that goes untreated. It could be anxiety, but yes, puberty could play a VERY large part in it.

It started developing when he was about 11 (when he was at the very beginning of puberty)

Sounds really similar to my anxiety. I would twitch, like legs would jerk around, shake, and OCD. Is it related to puberty? yes. Is it just puberty? No. Now, I am no doctor and can't tell you if it is anxiety or what, but it should be addressed if it is handicapping him in anyway.

It's TOURETTES, not TERRETS

It isn't handicapping him. It is barely noticeable, even by him.

Then why is it a problem?

It's not a problem, hes just slightly worried. And sorry my spelling wasn't up to my usual high standards, I know its tourettes, not terrets, I will go punish myself.

From what I understand Tourette's syndrome is something that is inherited and is something that does not just randomly happen due to some major event like puberty. It seems like Tourette's Syndrome manifests itself during childhood but no later than adolescence. Basically, it seems like your friend has an underlying risk factor for Tourette's syndrome, but it is still unknown why Tourette's starts when its does.

You should check out the following websites for more information:

1. Centers for Disease Control: http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/tourette/default.htm
2. Tourette Syndrome Association: http://tsa-usa.org/Medical/whatists.html

I hope that things work out for your friend as dealing with Tourette's on top of puberty is going to be super hard for him. I reckon you should be really supportive of him as he deals with his issues.
