For whatever reason, I installed Vista on my desktop again.. 6 weeks later it's fucked. Very slow.. programs not working.. can't create new folders or anything.
Back to XP I go :)

I've just got a new computer with vista on it. It seems fine.
What's the spec on your computer?
It could be that.

I have one laptop with Vista, and i must say i do not prefer it from this computer. This computer has XP Home Edition, and it is a LOT easier, and well, it's more my kind of thing.

Strange...maybe your pc isn't compatable with Vista?
Just thinking outloud.
EDIT: Ah...my Vista is home premium, the basic one, maybe your vista version is too powerful? Just thinking outloud again.

It was fine when I first installed it, after a couple of weeks it slows down and fucks up.
I hate how much ram it uses too. On a fresh intall XP uses around 100mb. On Vista it uses about 800-900mb.

That doesn't sound good. If mine does that in a few weeks i'll tell you...i've only had it for about a week.

If you're using Ultimate, 2 gb of RAM won't cut it. That's the minimum requirement, and it's barely recommended for Vista basic/premium. Therefore, I'd say it's yoru system.
Also, HP tends to make better units, because of the parts they use. But it's all about opinion.

True and that would explain his problem.

I've had Vista home basic and Vista Home premium on my computer and both of them have worked fine. Maybe your computer hates Vista.

Another thing is Vista does have a bunch of background software running and a lot of it is useless you should download http://www.yamicsoft.com/vistamanager/ this or buy it and it'll let you customize it and get rid of useless shit.

It's the weirdest thing, some people have no problems with vista, some people have a ton. My step dad is a computer programmer, so he had to buy a PC with Vista just to have it for compatability things, and I must say it is the worst computer I have ever seen. It wasn't one of the cheaper ones either. One time it completely deleted a couple important drivers and we couldn't get them back on, so we had to re-install vista which took hours for whatever reason. And now it suddenly just started running slower than molasses.
My whole family hates Vista with a passion.

Fine then. Here I go telling you that your computer is plenty good enough to run Vista.
1. Do you have a good, strong, security suite? I know there are several viruses floating around that target Vista specifically, and bog it down.
2. Do you have a lot of start up programs? If so, it might not even be Vista at all, but the amount of programs that are trying to run at once.
3. Have you tried turning off some visiual styles? Windows Aero uses an insane amount of RAM.
4. Another thing that uses quite a bit of RAM is UAC (User Account Control). Have you tried disabling that?
Really, Vista should be able to run on your computer. Hell, I had it running on an old P3, 1gb of ram rig. And it ran fine. (Vista Ultimate that is)
Hope this helps you. (If you havn't already re-installed XP :P )
Edit: Aww damn. You have re-installed XP :(

Windows XP has always been great for me. I don't think ever going to change it. If I get a laptop I might go to Vista just for a while to see how it is. But, for the most part I'm staying with XP.

Vista 32-Bit is a POS.
Vista x64 isn't half bad.
I couldn't go 2 seconds without the 32-Bit version killing itself, or anything else it touched. The 64-Bit version has run very nicely, for the most part.
RAM isn't an issue for me, as I have 8GB in this machine.
I'm using about 3.7GB of RAM Right now, but that's because I'm running two Virtual Machines, in VirtualBox, 1 XP MCE, 1 Server 2003, besides the several other applications I'm running.
EDIT: Jesse, how does UAC use a lot of RAM? That makes absolutely no sense.
And, I would not recommend disabling it. It's there for your protection, even if you know what you're doing. Things happen, and having it there preventing things from running that shouldn't be is a good thing.
I've heard of a few things that have happened that have massively screwed up systems after someone has turned UAC off. One of which is compatibility issues with AIM and disabling UAC. You install AIM with UAC off, and it can corrupt a lot of system permissions, and give you a LOt of issues.
I had to help someone on another forum through that problem a few weeks ago. Besides that, there's less chance of random unwanted things executing with it on.
You can make it less annoying, and tell it not to prompt you on certain applications. But, turning it off is generally a bad idea.
If anyone wants a way to cut some of the garbage out of Vista, they can try vLite. Google it. It lets you remove components that you don't need from the installation media. Same goes with nLite for XP.

I ran Vista on my laptop. It came with XP but was "Vista Premium Ready". I upgraded it to 2gb ram. It was fine at first, then after a while it bogged down and just became unuseable.
It's been running XP for months without a problem now.
