I would think so, but why not do it standing up?

Listen sweetheart it will not hurt oyu to use a tampon, just try not to be soo nervous. If doing it on your back helps then do it.

do what feels comfortable to you. there should be instructions on the back of the box if you need help. try putting a foot up on your bed or bathtub or something like that then putting it in. or you could just stick with pads if you feel more comfortable.

You might find that lying on your back could be easier for you. The angle your hand is at will be a little different, which may influence that, and also you won't be associating it with your previous lack of success while standing. Also, have you tried just sitting on the toilet? Chances are, if you have to change tampons in a public restroom (such as at school, a restaraunt, the mall...), there won't be room to lie down, at least not without everyone seeing you. Not to mention the floor in there probably isn't the cleanest. Sitting down can be helpful, because you can get your legs out of the way easier than while standing, and you can also see what you're doing better. Plus, you'll already be at the toilet to take the old tampon out, it's only natural to put the new one in at the same time.
Once you manage it, it'll be a lot easier in the future--that first time is always the hardest because it can be such a strange experience. There's no need to be nervous, though. It isn't going to hurt (though your first time or two it may be a little uncomfortable, you'll quickly get to a point where you won't even feel it), and there's absolutely no way it can get stuck in there. It can't get past your cervix, the area where the tampon is intended to rest, and the little string you pull to get it back out isn't going to fall off--you'd have to actually get out some scissors and cut the string off yourself, which I doubt you'll be doing. Even if there wasn't a string to pull, it'd be easy enough to grab the tampon between your thumb and forefinger. No worries, no matter what happens.

well its not even that im nervous about it getting lost or something, cuz i know in the worst case scenario, i just have to go to a doctor and have them...well, just have 'em fish it out lol. its just more...not knowing what to expect. and i wasnt thinking i would be on my back every time, just the first time, maybe the second but i wouldnt even let myself do it more than that, haha.

I wouldn't advise to do it lying down.
Standing up works best for most people. Some find that propping their foot on a chair helps. Others prefer sitting down on the toilet to insert it.
