OMG Im so sick of this divide between rockers! Many rockers hate emo's, fine thats their choice, but many take their hatred too far when there are more important people to battle: CHAVS!
MCR and the Used are two of my fave bands but like mabey some Used songs are Emo but I never seem to be able to put MCR into a catogory

I'm sorry, I can't consider half that shit punk. I don't see why The Ramones are always considered punk, they seem so much similar to the fuckin beatles. Sex Pistols LIVE sound punk, the rest seems almost light rock to me.
The Offspring is punk, Sum 41 is punk, NOFX is punk, but Fall Out Boy is pop, The almost and Red Jumpsuit are pop as well.
None of those are punk, NONE. You're mixing Alternative Rock, with punk.
Do people claiming punk is dead, NO. Mainstream punk is dead (Sex pistols/ramones/exploited) BUT, you clearly don't realize that that's the point? Punk was created to go against the mainstream, when these bands became mainstream, they lost their fan base in the underground scene's. Punk is fuckin alive, hell I just got back from a Punk show 2 hours ago. The difference is, local punk lives, it's not mainstream. Every neighbourhood has a punk scene, the key part is not being 14 and fucking finding it.
Stop jumping on the "punk is dead" bandwagon. THE MEDIA JUST CAN'T FIND IT. Hell, one of the bands in my city made their own recording label for punk in the tri-city area. I have over 30 punk CD's scattered around my computer.
When I ask someone if they've heard of "The Nummies, Hands of the Few, The Sewer Rats, The Gutter Demons" many say no, CUZ PUNK IS UNDERGROUND.
fuck you all, punk isn't dead. And the ramones are popish. They had a fanGIRL basis. The only girls I know who like punk are either lesbian or hardcore street kids.

Actually, I agree with you, Octo22; As apposed to everyone else.
I used to be all into that stuff...I loved the punk scene I loved that music, and yeah I think now a days its VERY hard to find that mainstream punk most everyone is looking for you know.
I don't think really any kind of music is "dead" there's always some sort of group out there that likes something people aren't into as much anymore...
I've always been torn ever since I really started growing up. Music is my life (aside from art and literature). I've grown to love and listen to almost anything...(look at my siggy...)
I've found out I REALLY like the indie rock and even indie rap (or underground)...just not mainstream. But I won't lie, I do listen to SOME popular songs (thats mostly because of my 8th grade brother). As long as the music can express the real me or my current emotions...
...It shouldn't matter as much...

Your a pink floyd fan yes well concidering u have a good taste in music I dont know how u can call green day punk and mcr punk
Greenday are more soft rock to pop rock
MCR are more alternative if u ask me they are to heavy to be pop to light to be heavy rock and to different to be plain rock. They use alot of classical riffs and make them heavy alot like Pink Floyd, Supertramp etc.

Umm...I wasn't aware that Green Day was emo but everything else you're right on! I love punk music but modern artists aren't at all punk.
Octo22
August 6th, 2007, 09:46 PM
What punk would call themselves a modern artist? o_o
Who the fuck talks about punk and says modern artist O_O
Green Day isn't emo, but they're sure as hell loved by the emo crowd. Green Day = soft / altern rock. Depending on song / album / year.

I think that last bit was sarcasm, but I can't tell for sure so I won't get nitpicky.
Sorry if I came off as offended, it just struck me as odd for you to say modern artist in a punk thread.
Also, I do know almost all there is to when it comes to Genre's, I've been obsessed with genres ever since getting into electronica, toughest type of music to tell apart.
I mean, I'm still having issues telling Dark Freeform from FINRG, also mixing in some psytrance with light ambient sound can mess it all up. but that's beside the point.

Sorry. I misunderstood you. I'm pretty into music so... I'm not too into music genres though. I feel they're quite limiting for artists. But, sorry again. I shouldn't have reacted like that.

August 8th, 2007, 02:17 AM
I feel they're quite limiting for artists.
If an artist tries to fill a genre, I'd agree, very limiting.
If an artist is so creative we have to make a new genre, not limiting at all ;D
Also there is alwayss mash-ups.

That's true. I've heard of a genre called something like electric bluegrass. lol It was the creepiest thing I ever heard but it was quite creative.

Wait...how is Green Day emo? I thought emo meant "emotional"...
Emo DOES NOT mean emotional.
All music has emotion, making it all emo.
Emo stands for Emotive Rock, a genre started back in the '60's. I'm sure someone else knows more on the subject, but I know it was from the '60's and only recently turned into garbage mainstream music.

No bands like Sum 41 who arent Hot Topic poser punk and can make fun of themselves is punk. My favorite bands are Sum 41, Green Day, The Clash, The Ramones The Buzzcocks, Misfits and NOFX. also rage against the machine, reel big fish, operation ivy and mighty mighty bosstones. I hate FOB, MCR, PATD and stuff like that

Okay..SUM 41 is.
A) Signed to a major record label
B) Played frequently on the radio
C) Jumps on a political bandwagon
D) Sounds NOTHING like punk. You've honestly never heard punk.
Alternative Rock:
Sum 41
Green Day
The Buzzcocks
Founders of Punk that played light rock:
The Clash
The Ramones
Misfits - Horror Punk (which is more of a rock than actual punk)
NOFX. <=== iffy, they're punk, but they're considered shitty punk.
rage against the machine <=== no idea the actual genre, BUT NOT PUNK.
Third wave SKA
reel big fish
operation ivy
mighty mighty bosstones.
Seriously buddy, learn your genres.
Want real punk?
Download for samples:
Punk:
A Global Threat - The Maine Punx
The Restarts - Labelled Inferior
The Virus - Already Dead
Behind Enemy Lines - Global Cannibal
Aus Rotten - Fuck Nazi Sympathy
Leftover Crack - Heroin or Suicide
And for decent ska (only Operation Ivy is any good of what you named):
Against All Authority - Sweet Televised Destruction
Once you've listened to these...tell me your bands are punk again. Seriously.
Just because they're not played at Hot Topic, doesn't suddenly make them so "omg punk."
Hot Topic = Scenester/Hardcore/Garbage < Mainstream Rock / Altern. Rock < Punk.

Alright dude if you seriously think your so fuckin smart woop dee do. cuz you obviously due. ska is a form of punk, which happens to be really good. Sum 41 is actually an extremely talented band maybe if you knew anything about em youd like em. NOFX is a great punk band and rage against the machine, one of the most political and controversial bands who made heavy anarchist music isnt punk? being mainstream dosent mean your not punk, it means your not underground. stop thinking you own the definition of punk because you dont. nobody does, thats what makes it punk!

Punk is not really dead.. but no one will replace The Black Flag... but anyways.. in my opinion Sum 41, Anti-Flag, NOFX, etc. are punk, but some bands that claim to be punk in my opinion aren't. And a lot of bands that are alternative are punk, and thats where people get the idea that G.A.D. (most of you probably haven't heard of them), Fall Out Boy, Dashboard Confessional, AFI, even Rise Against (who I don't see as punk) are punk. B/c Anti-Flag, Sum 41, NoFX, etc. are considered alternative, people think that all, or at least most alternative bands are punk, but not even 25% of alternative bands are punk. Punk isn't dead, but it is tough to name a lot of punk bands, while its easy as shit to name a lot of alternative bands, as punk bands fall under that... I love a lot of alternative bands... Anti-Flag, NOFX, Rise Against, G.A.D., The Bravery, Agent Orange, The Blood Brothers, A.F.I., etc. (I could name a million more, but I can only think of about 4 bands that I would truly classify as punk that are modern and still play today; so punks not dead, but its got some type of illness).

ska is a form of punk, which happens to be really good.
You're first fact is already wrong. Do a little research before you try arguing. Ska is from JAMAICA. is punk? No, they were formed in two completely different areas, Ska PUNK does exist but it's not SKA. When Ska was revived in America with the third wave, ska punk came into existence. But before that ska was it's own genre and still is. That's like saying because the Hardcore scene derived from punk, that it's punk. Clearly isn't, but it does share some characteristics.
Sum 41 is actually an extremely talented band maybe if you knew anything about em youd like em.
So suddenly "knowing about them" will make their music less generic? The word talented should only be used when talking about their marketing strategies.
Quick example of "talent". One of the more infamous locals from Ottawa in the punk scene is a drummer. He learned how to play Sum 41 songs first on drums, because they're quite easy (at least for anyone with muscle, noting that he's a Gravedigger). Everyone in the punk scene knows Sum 41 as alternative.
Does this make them BAD? No. You seem to have this mentality that if they're considered anything but punk they lose all credibility.
They make decent Altern.rock.
NOFX is a great punk band and rage against the machine, one of the most political and controversial bands who made heavy anarchist music isnt punk?
NOFX is just known for trying too hard. If you listen to a real punk band, you'll notice not every song has to be OMG GOVERNMENT.
They're decent, but get tiring quickly.
Rage Against The Machine a good Punk ROCK band, they do play punk rock but not punk.
And saying anarchist when referring to RATM hurts your case, they're not anarchists. And stating anarchist music makes someone punk? Lame.
I guess Public enemy is punk? I guess Marilyn Manson is punk?
No nononononononn.
Learn before you speak and realize genres aren't the end all of bands.
I listen to a band that you'd instantly go OMG PUNK, but they play Nu-Jazz. <3

Alright im obviously not as smart as you octo so i'll just stop pretending to like punk rock. im not tryin to reinvent the meaning of punk or try and make people like my favorite bands. This was my point. Punk isnt dead and never will be dead, whether its punk or punk influenced genres. whether its Punk like the germs, sub-humans, dead milk men, dead kennedys or face to face, Punk ROCK like Rancid, Pennywise, Misfits, etc. Alt rock like Rise Against, or SUM 41, or even SKA-CORE Operation Ivy, Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, or Sublime. Punk will live and people will always have their own opinions of it which only keeps punk stronger. So i hope you understand what im saying

That's actually a song they wrote to mock modern rock (at the time)
sounds nothing like their other shit. Besides recorded punk is usually garbage.
Look at Anal Cunt, recorded they're garbage, live they're amazing.
