How do you ask out a friend on a date, and make it clear that it is a date and not just hanging out?

How about "I'd like to take you out Saturday night".

Something direct and to the point, with the words "I want to take you out".

I'd make it clear that you want to start a relationship first. Just say something like "we've been friends for a long time and I'd like to see if we can take it a step further." Then you can see whether or not the other person even wants a relationship with you before you go on a "maybe" date.

that's probably the best way, assuming you want her to know it's a date.

"Do you want to go out on a date?"
