Sorry if this isn't really on-topic :| A few sundays ago my parents went to a pub to see my dad's friend playing in his band. They got home around midnight, and my mam was hurried up to the bathroom, which is across from my room (I was "sleeping") and my grandmother went in after her. At first I thought she was crying, I heard something high-pitched. But immediately after she started laughing. And she was escorted into bed. My father was ok. The next morning, my mum woke up, obviously upset. I told her I heard her the previous night. She hugged me and said "I'm so sorry. I'm so embarrassed" I asked what happened.....
It turns out she was drugged by someone. No idea who. But hearing her. The thought that I could drink and someone could slip something in, makes me upset. So I've decided to not drink if I can. Never.
I'd be surprised if you stick with that decision 3-4 years from now.

Michael, you can still go out and drink, but you have to be smart about it; if you don't want a similar thing to happen to you, there are steps you can take.
1) Get a drink that's pre-mixed and in a bottle (with a screw top), such as an RTD (ready to drink). Unless you're taking a drink from it, keep the lit screwed on and the bottle in your hand.
2) Make sure your drink is right in front of you and you can see it at all times - NEVER walk away and leave it or turn your back to it.
What happend to your mum is awful, but as far as I know, that's quite rare (at least where I live). My parents have owned a local bar for almost two years now, and there has only ever been ONE incident of someone being drugged. It's all about being smart when you go out, not to say that your mum wasn't. Sometimes these things just happen, and it's not fair. There are some real scum-bags out there. It IS safe to drink when you go out, but you have to be smart about it.
I'm glad to hear she's okay after that incident, that's not cool man.

Drinks being drugged is a very dangerous issue that doesn't get enough attention. It is especially important that women pay attention to it.
Keep an eye on your drink at all times (take it into the washroom with you if needed), and you should be fine. Being drugged is not necessarily a good reason not to drink, because a non-alcoholic drink is just as easy to drug.
