i now know why people cut themselves. they do it because of endorphins. which the brain releases as a natural painkiller and they make you feel good. the brain also releases endorphins doing somthing you enjoy. its not the pain that does it. so for anyone trying to quit cutting:
1. do things you enjoy and that make you feel good
2. be happy. wash off that gothic makup and smile smile smile.
3. if your in drastic measures, don't cut, take a brick and crush your hand, you'll forget about the pain and the endorphins will flood your system. and don't get a cast, just bandage it up so that you can just smack it against the wall later on.
(now i dont advise doing number 3 for the obvious reasons. i was joking, ok)

Number one is a good suggestion and it does help when you are trying to stop cutting. However, while the theory of the endorphin rush applies to some, it does not apply to all. Different people do it for different reasons at different points in their lives.
EDIT
For example, I did it primarily to see and feel (and taste) the blood. It didn't always matter if it hurt a lot or hardly at all. What did matter was the blood.

For some people pain is the reason why they cut, because it's a pain you can control. Or it's sorta like a punishment for themselves and they do it cause they feel like they deserve it. It could even be because it gives them a rush. You can't pin point one reason why everyone cuts, but your idea is a good one.

yea, everyone is different,
some people cut, trying to kill themselves,
some have no other way of dealing with there pain,
some like the pain, think they deserve it
and some are addicted.
and also, Gothic make up and etc. is not a reason why people are depressed XD
in fact some of the happiest people i've met have been "Gothic"

This is another reason why physically active people are sometimes happier than less active people.
When doing physical activities your brain releases endorphins which make you happy.

Im hoping number 2 was a joke, as well as number 3, otherwise you understand a lot less then you think.

yes that may be true but it would be nicer if they didn't look like a vampire.

Nicer for you maybe, but not for them. They like dressing like that and are happy with what they wear.

You didn't figure it out thats a theory. People have a right to express their personalities in the manner they want to. Cutting isn't all endorphins. People do it because its a either a method of suicide and it helps ease the pain.

2. Wow. Talk about stereotyping. From the outside I look about as preppy as guys come. Like, American Eagle is about the only thing I wear. (I know, shallow) Yet on the inside, you might as well call me "Emo".
3. Wow... bad joke..

number 1 is your ONLY constructive part of that post.
2. i wear MORE makeup now, not less, yet i'm far happier, so there. Tegan's right, most people who wear the thick heavy stuff are usually happy
3. that's SICK. dude... wows... um... .. that, that realyl won't help at all

Exactly. X_o I'm pretty much the same. Dressing "emo" or "goth" just seems so much like wearing emotions on my sleeves, where dressing "prep" lets me just blend in and look normal. That's a big point of cutting for me: I do not want to let others see my emotions.
You were probably just trying to lighten the mood with number 2, so I'm sorry if you feel like you're being attacked. I just hate it when people assume that all cutters are a certain way and that it's that simple to stop.

Saying "I know why some people cut" is like saying "I know why some people believe in God" there's about a million different reasons for both. So....good for you, you found out one theory. I bet that applies to maybe 0.5% of all people who cut. Congrats.
I'm not sure whether you meant all goths cut or most people who cut are goth or what, but either way you're pretty damn wrong sorry to say.
Honestly this thread isn't (and can't) go anywhere. I see it getting a few people mad, I'm disgruntled by it myself. Lock?

(now i dont advise doing number 3 for the obvious reasons. i was joking, ok)Joking or not self harm is a serious issue and here on VT we don't promote people to do harmful things, regardless if the intention is serious or not. I don't see anyone laughing either.
That's enough of this thread.
