A few months ago, the feature that allowed diary owners to make announcements was taken away. I have a suggestion and a question.

Why was this feature taken away? I want to know why because this is confusing me very much.

Can we possibly bring this feature back to the diary owners. It seems that the diary owners have had features taken away and I don't find that fair since I too am a diary owner.

But, I think we do need some limitations for this feature. Here are some that come to mind.

1. Let the diary owner make an annoucement in their diary but if they want to make another annoucement they must wait a few days, maybe one or two, to make another one, as not to abuse it.

2. Having a limit to how many annoucements that a diary owner can make. (This excludes any global annoucements)

3. Making sure that the owner isn't making useless annoucements like a link to a website or something else.

Umm...I don't feel like searching but this question was asked and answered by the staff. IT was taken away because people were abusing it. I was surprised because I loved that feature but I notced it was being abused too, so I untimately agreed with the staff's decision because I have had my diary for a year.

I doubt the admins will be bringing it back because in theory the owners don't need it. You can always lock and sticky threads or in my case Kodie offered to post announcements for you. (Thanks) so umm yeah.

I hope that answered your question.

I agree with numbers 2 and 3 but not 1. I don't think there's any way to make a time limit.

I believe it was taken away because people were making wayyy to many. You do not need the "welcome" and "rules" to be seperate, and you don't need to post an announcement just for one small link. I have seen some people do that and it gets really annoying because announcements will stick up on the "new posts" button until you read them.

But I'm not a diary owner so I don't care. If you can use it, don't abuse it. And if you don't have it, it's because of other people's abuse. If that's the case, you have to accept how it is now. That's my opinion.

You can ALWAYS use stickies instead.

You should allow a Prefix like: Annoucment

The main reason that got them removed was because people were posting html in announcements and there isn't any way to restrict html use in announcements so we were left with no choice but to disable the privilege.

If there was a way for html to be restricted in announcements, then diary owners would still be able to post them but for now that isn't possible.

Although please read this:

It's not fair? You're lucky you're even allowed to have a diary. It's a privilege. Be grateful for the lengths the staff goes to so that members have all these cool features. The privilege to be able to make your own announcements in diaries was abused and was taken away but you still have the VERY considerable privilege of being able to retain ownership of your own personal forum. Be. Grateful.

Stuck threads are good, too, and if you don't want replies to them, like in announcements, lock them.

Someone abused it by putting a shoutbox in an announcement. It got taken away. Unfair, yes. That's life. Just be happy with what you've got.

That incident was not the only reason. There were other incidents that attributed to the decision.

I think our question got answered here...

And stickys dont expire, annoucments do, if you make a really good annoucment, but you forget to back it up, there goes all of your hard work.

actually there is a way to retrieve your announcements - they don't just delete themselves. Sorry :\

Zach is correct. Announcements don't self-delete. You could have recovered them in the moderator control panel by simply editing the expiration date to a later date.

at least you don't have to worry about them =)

I like it better this way cause now it forces you to limit the stickies you have.

I assume that may be part of it.
Imagine what VT would be like on a busy day.

That actually isn't a reason that got them disabled.

Really? But it still seems like a good reason.
Half of those announcements look like they are useless [as in could be in a regular thread] from diary owners

Well you only get them bunched up like that on new posts. All you have to do is open the announcement while logged in to mark them read.

And plus that looks like govteen and we don't have that many diaries to fill up that many announcement.
