no :( but our school encourages those who have them, to bring them and use them. so i'm currently in long term negociations with my parents to get one. so far, negociations have stalled, damn it!

My middle school gave kids a laptop to use in our core classes but not to talk home.

My school has several sets of laptops teachers can check out for their classes when they don't want to go to the library/computer lab for whatever reason.

My school would never bother.
The kids would probably use it to buy drugs.

Haha, are you kidding?
We're a very poor district.
We're lucky to still have music and art programs.
The only people who get laptops are the gym teachers,
So that they can enter the roll call quicker,
Rather than going back to their offices.

That's exactly what our school does...starting last year, my senior year.

No, my school is a prep school and the majority of kids already have laptops.

When I was in high school, we weren't supplied with individual laptops. They did supply Wi-Fi for the few people who brought their computers to school, and we also had a laptop computer lab that I found to be enough.

My generation was the one that wrote on notebooks that were made out of paper (:P), and when we were in elementary school, we hated typing up stuff. When we were asked to type assignments out, the whole class would groan. We liked writing them out instead.

umm no who has that money? and what's the guarantee that these laptops won't be destroyed? if I were to become a school administrator this would be a cold, bitter, utter, yet loud and angry, no.

my school does the same. with some of the special ed students, they give them laptops like they give everyone those calculators...they can take them home and everything but they have to give them back at the end of the year. they think it will help them take better notes or something.

Money can be a grant from somewhere, fundraising, etc.
If the laptop gets destroyed (Dropped or something) then I am sure they have some type of insurance and the student has to pay a certain percentage. The students have to sign "contracts" before they can use it.

My answer would be a yes because we had laptops for every class in 8th grade and I LOVED IT!

I dunno what to vote... t first I thought 'yeah' but then I realised you may be talking about laptops to take home.

We have laptops available for use on school premises, if that counts. If not, then it's a no?

Like Neptune said, we students at *#$%*(censor)^#!$ County High School pay insurance, and fees. Besides, most students here love their laptops because we can take them home, download stuff, and plug them up to ipods.

Yes, not everyone though

people who are dyslexic or dyspraxic or have some special needs no matter how big or small, they are stuck on the waiting list for a laptop (1 month you have to wait normally)

However if u have your own laptop you can bring it in and type up notes and also use the school wifi (heavily monitored)

Whoa. I don't know how you guys' schools systems worked but ours worked liekt his:

We sign a contract at the beginning of the year that basically says we will be nice. We are then assigned a number that we have to use for all classes. Then we had 4 classes so we had 4 computers. One for each class that we are to use all the time. They were Powerbooks so they were Remote Access capable so our teacher could basically spy on us and control us. Umm what else. We could do all of our work on the computer and our teachers would structure lessons around our computers. There are also strict internet blocks and there were also programs called Deep Freeze that would basically erase everything when we logged out. So the computers can't be broken by hacking or anyhitng because in order to do most things you need server access.

we have a contract to sign, if we break it we can get reported to the police.

I tried hacking into the firewall (to delete dodgy comments someone I left) I had a heavy warning, next time I break the contract I'm off the system and reported to the police under the computer misuse act.

freaky, much?

Yes and no.

We each get a user name, which is just your last name and the first letter of your first name. We have 3 computers in the library, a lab that is used for computer based classes, such as Computer 7, Computer 8, and others. And we also have the "Mini Lab" which is a computer lab that teachers sign up to use for a class period.

Now that I think about it, the school got new computers put in the Mini Lab, so now all we have are desktops.

So, no.

well there IS a reason why most schools don't do this and I agree, I just don't think it's a needed change. Also, how about upkeep? like, that would be 1 more thing to put on the list, and schools have looonnnnggggg assss lists, if you haven't noticed. I just say no. That's my opinion.

After wasting money on things we don't need...
no.
There are plenty of desktop computers for people to use but laptops would be way better. I think the school figures that most people have their own. There's also open wifi in certain areas of the school, but not many people seem to use or know about it.

They do if you have some sort of special needs problem, but not for others who dont have writing problems.

No, the teachers would laugh at us if we even suggested bringing our own one in :(
I think before we get laptops given to us we should get proper computers.. if you look at the bottom of our school's CPUs there's a sticker saying that it's the property of another local high school.
