this is always something i never understood. why is it that the "tomboy" label is available to girls, and accepted, but boys can't have a little femininity without being crucified.

thats a good question actually. i would say that i have more girl friends then guy friends. i'm a sensitive type of person and probably not the stereotypical guy. but in saying that i'm interested in guy things like sports and stuff, but i always connect better with girls with most other things. i haven't really been "crucified" but i do have comments made about my personality, but really, i don't care. i'm content with myself as a person however it doesn't stop me from feeling down at times about who i am, so i guess in that sense i do get crucified emotionally. so in summary yasemine, i agree with you and i don't know why it is.

In many societies throughout history, men were considered "superior" (I'm not being sexist, that's just how it was) so when a girl acts like a boy, it's like she was bettering herself, though when a guy acted liked a girl, he was showing weakness.
Again, not being sexist. That's just why I think they frown upon it. Old biases remain?

that i agree with, and when you think about it, times haven't changed.

I guess you could say im a typical guy, most of my friends are guys and I only really talk to girls that I'm interested in. As for why guys being girly is not accepted, I think its mostly other guys who see them as "gay" and they can't accept that so they make fun of them.

this may seem unrelated, but back in the earlier years, it was more acceptable for men to act what we would consider 'girlie' (think frilly shirts, wigs[ah, hello, vain much?], and makeup['fraid i cant give u a source, i read too many historical books])
it's ironic how things have turned.
To answer the question, probably because it's consitered "gay"(hey don't look at me...) now adays. it's sad really..

Well I have to disagree. Theres a guy at school who has all girl friends, and no guy likes him because of it. So everyone acts mean to him.

I dunno. Almost all my close friends are girls. I can't stand most boys.

I'm really feminine both in personality and in body stature (i'm like 6'4" and a 140lbs soaking wet)
And I just don't care
Its just how I am

Nice Donny Darko reference (I think)...lol
I'm pretty masculine, but my better friends are all girls. It's really pretty equal for me for the most part though. I know what you mean though, the "girly" guys are usually not liked all that much by guys, but, hey, girls seem to love them...

Many girls like to be friends with more feminine guys because they can relate to them.

I'm actually feminine and very sensitive but after being continuously teased I just learned to act masculine around school. Men are seen as strong, heartless, and mean people and when we show any kind of softness it gets attacked.

Some people bash them because throughout history it's been about male dominance.
But in this day and age that's not the case, and some have a hard time accepting guys that seem a bit feminine.
I know here where I live, they get called gay all of the time, and it's not true in most cases.
I love 'girly' guys though.
They're more down to earth because they don't feel the need to be all macho and impress people. And soooo much easier to get along and talk with.
Every guy that I've dated has seemed 'feminine' by others,
But that's just how I like 'em :)

my dad is one of those machismo jerks, and he uses the word "fruitcake." i never got along with him, because i didn't turn out to be his son.

Most of my better friends are girls too. I have a few guy friends (not many I can trust completely). They are hard to please :P By that, its hard for me to talk to them for a while or hang out with them. Tis weird.
