Now I just want to say that this is stupid. Very stupid. What are you gonna do when you flight gets hijacked????
Exactly.
Congress needs to be wasting our money doing something good instead of wasting time on stupid legislation like this.

WASHINGTON - Cell phone calls on airplanes in flight are not only unsafe, they're obnoxious and they should be permanently banned, according to some members of Congress.

House members, most of whom board airplanes almost every week, traded horror stories Thursday about their worst experiences with annoying fellow passengers who talk loudly on cell phones before takeoff and after landing. One lawmaker said his wife sat next to a woman who loudly discussed her sex life on the phone.
Another House member topped that with the passenger sitting him behind on one flight who got a "dear John" phone call from either his wife or sweetheart just before takeoff. The begging and pleading was just terrible to listen to, he said. Finally, with the plane ready to take off, a flight attendant had to threaten to have U.S. Marshals drag the man off the plane before he finally put his phone away.
A third House member raised the specter of national security, saying she'd witnessed one man use his cell phone camera to take pictures of sensitive parts of the airplane.
With that, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved by voice vote a bill that would make the current Federal Aviation Administration and Federal Communication Commission ban on cell phone use during flight permanent.
The committee's action comes as the European Union is moving to allow airline passengers to talk on their cell phones during flight. Some U.S. airlines are experimenting with in-flight Internet access. And some lawmakers worry that domestic airlines might try to get the cell phone ban lifted so they can charge passengers extra to sit in no-phone sections.
"I do believe this is important that we don't make what is already a crowded and difficult environment for the traveling public and flight attendants" worse by allowing cell phone use in-flight, said Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., sponsor of the Halting Airplane Noise to Give Us Peace (HANG UP) Act.
But Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., said there are a lot of annoying things on airplanes, including children with dirty diapers and noisy MP3 players, but that doesn't mean they should be banned.
"You are trying to legislate courtesy, folks, and that just doesn't work," Mica said.

I thought it was already banned?
Also, an argument to your thoughts John-
You could have radios in the cockpit and flight attendant stations

I kind of agree because the radio waves from cell phones interfere with the airplanes electrical systems, so it could cause a lot of trouble.
BUT I doubt everyone turns off their cell phone, so it must be a small chance that the cell phone could do anything, but better safe than sorry.

Cell phones, or as we like to call them mobile phones, have zero effect on an aircrafts capibilities these days. The UK's communications regulator I believe is in the process to allow people to make calls and use other wireless devices on board aircraft. The ban on usage during flight, I believe, is an outdated precaution. Albeit one I would like to see stay in force. When you are stuck in a small space like a plane you don't need to listen to people on the phone.

A third House member raised the specter of national security, saying she'd witnessed one man use his cell phone camera to take pictures of sensitive parts of the airplane.
I would love to know where these sensitive parts are. It's an airplane, its not like is a classified vehicle. This member clearly knows nothing and what annoys me more is this is probably the very reason a ban will remain. You Americans, and I mean this in the best possible way, are fucked because people love using that term "National Security". Nothing but unnecessary scare tactics.

My friend's dad is a pilot of the big huge jumbo-jets. He says the only thing that cell phones would interfere with would be the communications system. So the pilot might hear your phone call. :P But he said that chance is almost zero. He said the average person has a better chance of going to the moon than your cell phone does interfering with the plane.
He's fairly certain that they don't interfere with any important systems, or jeopardize the safety of any of the passengers. He himself has used a cell phone while flying!
Congress should be working on how to pull this nation out of the craphole, not on banning cell phones during flight.

Edit:

You Americans, and I mean this in the best possible way, are fucked because people love using that term "National Security". Nothing but unnecessary scare tactics.

As an American, I agree completely.

I agree with alex.
Hasn't anyone seen that Mythbusters episode. Ill post it if I find it

I didn't find the video but I found a statement:

Cell Phones on Planes
Myth: Cellphones don't interfere with plane instrumentation -- it's a conspiracy to get passengers to pay the higher priced in-flight phones.
Result: Using a faraday cage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_Cage) to block outside interference, the MythBusters set up a few common instruments from jetliners inside while using a cellphone. At 800-900MHz (a common cellphone bandwidthfrequencies), there's definite interference on some of the aircraft instrumentation. Because of federal law, they can't test in the air, though they're able to do so on a grounded private plane., and the tests there show no interference at all. The MythBusters call the conspiracy busted because they believe the airlines are simply not taking any chances with cellphones, since new ones with new frequencies are coming out every day. Quote of the episode: Adam, in a very helium-high voice: "Once, in every generation, a myth comes along that does not thrill us. Ha ha ha ha haaaa!"

However, these Politicians are worrying more about "politeness" than navigations. I have never ever seen someone use their phone while in flight. Only while taxing back to the gate. People aren't stupid. Our Congress is stupid. it is a stupid law and makes me want to go to Law School even more.

you aren't allowed to have mobile phones on in planes within australia at anytime during the flight unless you have some special in flight mode on your phone. nothing new for me!

Well what they are focusing on in this legislation is banning them for use like...as soon as you board the skyway thingy. So youo can't have it when you taxi, you can't have it when you are waiting on the tarmac for hours upon end. Ehh...stupid idiots we have working there.

Stupid.
They ask you not to use them anyway,
And most people inmy experience obey.
We need to focus on more important matters,
Rather then cell phone regulations of all things.
Leave that up to the airlines themselves
To make those rules.

Stupid. I would prefer having the person next to me talking on the phone the whole time, rether than talking to me, or having the kicking-baby-from-hell-who-kicks-the-back-of-my-seat-all-flight-long-baby sitting in back of me.

EDIT: I have texted while in the air before, and nothing happened.
I have also had my laptop out when we where taking off... and will you believe this... NOTHING HAPPENED!

Oooh! Youre not supposed to do that. You are supposed to stow them away in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you. I can see the danger in having stuff out during take-off. If you guys crash things will fly everywhere and hit people if there are stuff out.
