Believe it or not, there are several requirements to satisfy before a pre-operative transsexual can even begin taking hormones. The Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association's Standards of Care for Gender Identity Disorders states that before beginning a hormone regimen, the following criteria must be met:

The patient must be of legal age (at least 18 years old).
The patient must have demonstrable knowledge of what hormones can medically do and not do, and be aware of their social benefits and risks.
Either:

A documented real life experience should be undertaken for at least three months prior to the administration of hormones.

OR
A period of psychotherapy of a duration specified by the mental professional after the initial evaluation (usually a minimum of three months) should be undertaken.

The Association also provides "Readiness Criteria." This means that they are not requirements per se, but are judgment calls to be made by the patient's doctor:

The patient has had further consolidation of gender identity during the real-life experience or psychotherapy.
The patient has made some progress in mastering other identified problems leading to improving or continuing stable mental health. This basically implies an absence of mental problems such as sociopathy, substance abuse, psychosis, or suicidal tendencies.
Hormones are likely to be taken in a responsible manner.

You can talk to your doc (if you haven't already) about it to, they'll give you an insight into it.
And i think there are certain types of doctors for this treatment but i don't know what there called.

just getting srs won't do anything for you, without hormones. you don't need breast therapy. the estrogen gives you breasts. i don't need face therapy. i have a good face already.

(Well, first a shout out to Thomas who again spends the time to research and provide us with really great info, we should sart calling him 'The Professor'. Then, AxLr and Ryan giving good, caring advice! I just love it when people help eachother out, it reaffirms my belief that there's hope for our species afterall).

OK, Yasmine, I think the hormonal therapy is part of the overall treatment, so you'd need to talk with the MD working with you. If that's sometime in the future, it might be helpful (and hopeful!) to spend time researching it so you can anticipate the results.

Also, something else to add. As far as I know. Its irreversible. it changes everything about6 you. From what you do/say to your actual body image. You might tern out that after you get it done. You dont come here anymore. Take that into consideration. But remind yourself that we cannot chose for you. Its your choice alone.

Read the other posts and you'll see that it says she has to be 18.
