Debating religion is like debating santa clause, no matter how many facts somebody levies against it don't matter. Religion is based on pure unyielding unquestioning faith. Debate is based upon logic, reasoning, and facts, because of this the two have no place being put together.
No matter how many "facts" somebody may levies for,or against it you always end up back at square one with something like
i dont care about what anyone thinks and about the "facts" its my fuckin belief so lets leave it at that.So go ahead post your "I belv in g0d", and "GoD SUx0rs" threads, but all your doing is wasting database space, and probably getting somebody pissed off.

Mhm....
I agree with you, I don't see why people always post about that stuff....
Maybe we need a religion sticky.
Hell, this thread needs to be a sticky, so we can keep all the "God" talk in one place:

Why do people constantly compare religion to Santa Clause when all the facts about him are traced back to the fiction writer that created him.

I think limiting religion to one thread of discussion is a bad idea. Religion is an experiential thing. Religious poll-taking -- "I'm a Christian!!!", "Christian sucks!!!" -- is not why I come here. I don't care what other people's opinions are. We have demographic surveys for that. I care what their ideas are.
If someone wants to come into a discussion just to say "I believe because I have faith," or "I don't believe but I won't talk about why," that's just boring. But I think we have better discussions than that.

I resent that comparison. I don't like my faith being compared like that.

Well yeah his examples arent all that great
But the point is almost good.
You can't debate religion. And debating religion simply doesn't work.
Because the people who are skeptic make it their mission to soil on someones beliefs. And to the people who are religious well.. Its a cocktail for a flame-troll fest

I resent that comparison. I don't like my faith being compared like that. I didn't mean that in a derogatory fashion. The analogy was meant to illustrate tha both require you to have faith that they exist, not proof. Sorry i couldn't come up with better explains:whoops:. This thread wasnt meant to support or discredit religion, im just tired of seeing all the fighting, and name calling caused by these types of debates.

Oh I know what point you are making and it is true. Debating religion is stupid. 99% of the time someones opinion will never change from either participating or viewing.

Agreed, i mean try to remember you saw somebody debate say, "wow! that was a rely good point, now i don't believe in god", or the converse of that statement.

I don't necessarily think minds need to change for a discussion to be interesting, but I think I'm outnumbered on this one. :)

I find the religious discussion threads fun sometimes, but only when the people contributing are mature enough to take everyone's opinions and respond respectfully.

I actually agree with Alex. I think that was a very bad comparison. God and Santa...there is a difference.

Have you ever read a religion debate on a forum with a million users?
You simply wont have the energy to read the entire thread to find out there was a hand full of sensible people out of a truck load of immature ones
