I have a friend, lets call him bob, anyways, bob gets high and drunk all the time. his uncle and aunt are mean to him. hes told me hes though about killing them. hes told me hes had suicidal thoughts, i would stick around and try to help but he wants me to drag me in the shithole with him and i refuse to do that, ill stand from the side and watch if he really cares that much, do you think i did the right thing in avoiding him, i mean ive tried to help him in the past. By the way his mom is nice but shes messed up with drugs and has casual sex with guys in the house and bob as told me stories of hearing them, did i do the right thing?

Yes, you did the right thing.
Your responsibility is to yourself, and if you find someone's behavior offensive or intolerable, you should avoid them so as to avoid the behavior itself.
That said, as a friend (and a good person), you also have an obligation to explain to this person what your concerns are and why you've decided to avoid contact with him, hopefully he values your friendship (or has the self control) to change his behavior enough to hold onto you.

OK, it sounds like it was a good decision for you, then!

There is another avenue you could try. You could keep the friendship and refuse to partake in the things you find distasteful/offensive.
You could try to reach out to him. Try to help him by getting him to open up to you and then to seek help. He is obviously in pain and is probably trying to numb it or forget it by abusing drugs and alcohol.

I think you did the right thing. He is having a hard life so I would suspect that would be the reason. But if you dont help him. He may fall......
