Is caffeine really that bad for you? Because I started drinking mountain dews again :O And I remember my friend saying that for every dew that you drink you have to drink 2 cups of milk to replenish the calcium or something like that.

"With these effects, caffeine is an ergogenic: increasing the capacity for mental or physical labor. A study conducted in 1979 showed a 7% increase in distance cycled over a period of two hours in subjects who consumed caffeine compared to control tests.[52] Other studies attained much more dramatic results; one particular study of trained runners showed a 44% increase in "race-pace" endurance, as well as a 51% increase in cycling endurance, after a dosage of 9 milligrams of caffeine per kilogram of body weight. The extensive boost shown in the runners is not an isolated case; additional studies have reported similar effects. Another study found 5.5 milligrams of caffeine per kilogram of body mass resulted in subjects cycling 29% longer during high intensity circuits" I suppose it's good in some sense lol

"n large amounts, and especially over extended periods of time, caffeine can lead to a condition known as caffeinism. Caffeinism usually combines caffeine dependency with a wide range of unpleasant physical and mental conditions including nervousness, irritability, anxiety, tremulousness, muscle twitching (hyperreflexia), insomnia, headaches, respiratory alkalosis and heart palpitations. Furthermore, because caffeine increases the production of stomach acid, high usage over time can lead to peptic ulcers, erosive esophagitis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

There are four caffeine-induced psychiatric disorders recognized by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition: caffeine intoxication, caffeine-induced anxiety disorder, caffeine-induced sleep disorder, and caffeine-related disorder not otherwise specified (NOS)."

Also it's bad

Anything in moderation (with thte exceptioin of drugs for the most part) iis perfectly fine.

HHHMMM...7% increased eh? And I just happen to like to go biking....:) Well I don't mountain dew a lot anymore lol And it said in large amounts that bad things happen.

And remember that it's a chance any of those things are likely. And all the probabilities are different, but on average probably the serious symptoms occur maybe every 1 out of 1500 people. lol Not that often. That number is off by 1 or 2 hundred people, but still. It's probably substantially low, but for little things like being jittery or heart rate increase it's practically guaranteed after consuming a certain amount of caffeine.

I don't get how you get "addicted" to caffeine though because I could easily stop drinking drinks with a lot of caffeine like Mountain Dew because I just like the taste, not the fact that I'm addicted to the caffeine in it. Lol I'm weird, real energy drinks don't do anything to me, and I've already stop drinking mountain dew for like 3 months.

SirRawrsalot

Well, after drinking large quantities your body gets used to the caffeine intake and then just stopping immediately somehow induces headaches or something around that. I'm not trying to be a scientist. lol Just like anything else, sometime people are easily addicted and sometimes they'll never actually be addicted. You never know.

I remember my friend saying that for every dew that you drink you have to drink 2 cups of milk to replenish the calcium or something like that.

There's no way the effect is that drastic for one soda. Yes, there have been studies done about the relationship between calcium in the body and soda consumption, but it's hard to tell if the upset in calcium is due to the effects of soda on the body or milk being replaced by soda in the diet. It's probably a combination of both.

As for caffeine addiction, it's a tough call.

I know people who can't function without their morning coffee... headaches, difficulty concentrating... and I have another friend who's hooked on coffee and energy drinks.

And on a slightly off-topic note, I'd be careful when using information from Wikipedia. I just don't trust it well enough for other then wide, general information.

Oh, I could rant at you for hours for that, but thanks for expressing your concern. I think I'm smart enough to check the place where they got the information.

Well mountain dew does have the most caffeine out of all the sodas and even just a cup of coffee.

Yeah, you may be smart enough to know how to handle Wikipedia, but not everyone is. I just want to do Homer's "D'oh!" when I hear other people trying to use it as an academic resource.

Now back on topic...

Jolt, Pepsi One, and Red Bull have more, and then there's coffee with the greatest amount.

Thats weird, I've always thought, and heard that Mountain Dew has more caffeine that a cup of coffee. Oh and I consider Jolt an energy drink, kinda of the whole point of its name lol SODA, like as in coke, sprite (even though its caffeine free), and things like that. Not energy drinks because well thats kinda the whole point of them so you can't compare the two.

Ever wonder where the name "Coke" (as in coca cola) comes from?

Way back when, when Coke soda was introduced, they added this ingredient from the Coca plant, and nick named it 'Coke'. It's effects included increased energy and a feeling of well being. It was considered the 'Wonder drug', touted for relieving everything from gout to memory loss.

We've learned a lot since then, so cocaine has been taken out of soda pop, but the need to market it as a 'soft drink' continued with the addition of caffeine. In small amounts, it's OK, focusing attention, and giving that sense of well being. But do you need it? I don't know, does anyone need soda at all, or is it just one of those little indulgences?

In moderation, these things are OK. The problem is, some people don't do too well with moderation, if they like something, it's 24/7. Anything done like that has the potential of causing problems. And it's not just caffeine, it's all the sugar, too.

But the calcium thing isn't about the caffeine, it's about the phosphorus/phosphate additive, which is to give it added fizz. That's been clearly shown to interfere with the bodies ability to metabolize and use calcium, which is essential to strong bones.

So, remember that old saw, "Everything in moderation". And in some cases, maybe in as little moderation as possible, esp. if there are other substitues. A lot of this, what we like, is learned. Keep an open mind about learning new, maybe more basic things that donlt carry the same potential for being a problem.

Caffeine is bad and I would consider it to be addicting. To the point that if you consume a great amount of caffeine everyday and then suddenly stop, your body would have symptoms of withdrawal. I am a little bit addicted to energy drinks and coffee. I don't think they taste very good, but I love to drink them. They don't give me much energy, but enough to wake me up. I did crash once or twice. One time I had a Rockstar energy drink and a 24 oz. cup of coffee and I had a little crash. Another time I had a jolt or NOS energy shot and a Rockstar and I had a small crash, but I had so damn much energy that it was worth it. Of course maybe the guarana is addictive in energy drinks, I don't know. Guarana is basically the same as caffeine, but maybe a little bit stronger. Good stuff, but bad stuff!!

Lol once at a lock in, I drank like 20 mountain dews, I didn't get any energy, I just didn't go to sleep lol No crash :O Was really weird.

OMG my brother was like hooked on NOS, he has like 70 cans of the stuff in his closet stack on each other. He would like stay up all night from the stuff, then go to sleep at like 3, then wake up for school at like 6 or 7. Bad to be addicted.

SirRawrsalot

And it's expensive! I could never afford that! lol What are they like 2 bucks each? Hell no.

george
July 4th, 2008, 12:52 AM
They're like $3 at the gas station that he would buy them at. But yeah, do you think that most people that don't get crashes from drinking things with caffeine also don't get hangovers from like being drunk?

SirRawrsalot

WWOOOWWW ok lol I've never been drunk, but I'm just saying because my friend at this camp I went to, was like really drunk but didn't get a hang over. And he also drank a lot of energy drinks and never crashed.

NOS where I got it was like $2.59 for a little bottle like 2 oz. It was slightly cheaper than a Jolt energy shot, which was about $3. Very expensive shit and something that you wouldn't want to get addicted to. I only buy them if I have to work an early shift at work. The 5 a.m. shift. Not very often. That's just the shots though. I buy full energy drinks, the 16 oz or whatever they are cans quite often though.

SirRawrsalot
July 4th, 2008, 02:04 AM
lol I'd rather not waste my money. Do they actually work?

theOperaGhost
July 4th, 2008, 02:20 AM
The energy shots do work pretty well. You are pretty jittery for about 30-60 minutes. Then you have a good amount of energy for about 4-5 hours. I've only had a crash when I mix it with a lot of coffee or another energy drink.

Energy drinks don't really do much for me though and they have a strong taste, so I think I am kind of addicted to them, because they don't taste very great.

SirRawrsalot
July 4th, 2008, 02:24 AM

Mountain Dew luckily isn't for energy, it simply keeps you away, and seeing as how its like 3:45 in the morning and I'm still not asleep and I'm writing this, it obviously does a very good job of that.

Mountain Dew = staying up

Energy Drinks = energy lol
