you Rep someone by clicking the scale in the bottom left of their post: http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/images/styles/fblue/buttons/reputation.gif and clicking either "I approve" or "I disapprove".

You do not see the actual Rep Point change. By adding Rep to someone, you add the number equivalent to your Rep Power to their Rep Points. Rep Power and Rep Points are completely different things. Rep Points show how much people like your posts, and Rep Power shows how much you can influence someone's Rep Points.

So, the reason you didn't see it change is because you Repped them, and that influences their Rep Points, not their Rep Power.

Green blocks? The more you have, the more Rep Points you have.

To find out how many Rep Points you have, go to the top of the page, click "User CP", and then click "User Control Panel". You should see a section in the middle of the page that says "Latest Reputation Received". On the right of that bar is your Rep Point number.

Your Rep Power is shown in your post under the amount of posts or blog entries you have.
example (where the light blue arrow points):

All of your questions are answered alternatively in the Rep Guide (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=7622).

^^ Are you trying to be a dumbass? If not, no, the fact that you're in the red means not a lot of people here respect you and that you don't exactly make the highest quality posts...

I should've used the word didn't rather than did. But yeah, all you need to do is make a couple quality posts and you should be out of the red. Be aware though, never abuse the rep system, because you can get in trouble for that. Only give negative rep if the post truly was just a terrible post that either was off-topic or was racist/prejudice/demeaning/etc... And positive rep shouldn't be thrown around either, only give it if the poster truly deserves it, in that they either really helped you out or in that they made a very helpful post that it is apparent they put time and effort into [or at least effort into].

wat do the purple bars mean

They may look like they're purple, but they're actually grey.
You know how additions are green and subtractions are red? Well, when there's a grey bar (named "neutral") it shows that the person who gave you Rep didn't have any Rep Power, so it doesn't do anything.
