Hormones is a substance, produced by one tissue and then released by the bloodstream to another to effect physical and mental activity, such as growth or metabolism.( Was taken out of my medical handbook)
In simpler words, it's a chemical that your body creates. Then this chemical goes into your bloodstream into another bloodstream. This chemical is what controls/affects you're daily activities and thinking. Also it's what controls how you grow and how you eat and stuff.
We have it because it's essential for our bodies to mature. If we didn't have hormones, we would all be looking like little kids. We wouldn't have intimate feelings for other people, there wouldn't be any babies.
Hope this helps

I think Ryandel has the gist of it.
Hormones are 'chemical messengers' that regulate metabolism, they control various bodily functions.
So, during puberty, the sexual hormones control the groth and maturation of the sexual organs. We see the result with growth, hairiness, and feel their presence with new found sexual awareness, like arousal, 'horniness', etc.

No problem, glad I could be of assistance. I try to respond quickly, this helps the asker because it can also get other people to answer even a more detailed or better version of the first answer. Makes sense in my head, not sure if it does to ya. But ya no prob. I'm willing to answer anytime.

At last, a chance to show my intelligence!
Hormones are chemical messages secreted by the glands and are transported around the body through the bloodstream and then they generally fuck with your body.
They make you more sexual aroused, grow more hair, and faster than before. You sweat more, your skin is greasier and more oily (hence the spots) and you grow, alot.
That is my definition of hormones.
I'm a world of knowledge, not all of it usefull or relevant. :-)

Thats not really it.....
Hormones (from Greek ὁρμή - "impetus") are chemicals released by cells that affect cells in other parts of the body. Only a small amount of hormone is required to alter cell metabolism. It is also a chemical messenger that transports a signal from one cell to another. All multicellular organisms produce hormones; plant hormones are also called phytohormones. Hormones in animals are often transported in the blood. Cells respond to a hormone when they express a specific receptor for that hormone. The hormone binds to the receptor protein, resulting in the activation of a signal transduction mechanism that ultimately leads to cell type-specific responses.
Endocrine hormone molecules are secreted (released) directly into the bloodstream, while exocrine hormones (or ectohormones) are secreted directly into a duct, and from the duct they either flow into the bloodstream or they flow from cell to cell by diffusion in a process known as paracrine signalling

hormones are produced by glands they are either endocrine glands or exocrine glands. They are chemical messangers who give your body signels they do not I repeat do not control your daily activities and your ability to think. That falls under the control of your cerebellum which produce no hormones what so ever, but instead sends inpulses through your nerves. Hormones, tell your body what needs to grow, what needs to be produced and how its supposed to be done.

Yes that's not all of it, but human biology and neuro-systems aren't my major. Also I didn't use wikipedia because of some misleading information that's posted there. One more thing hormones can be a factor in your daily thinking, as hormones affect emotions also. I didn't mean it as they're mind controlling/altering substances. They just play a role on growth.
And my answer was pretty much another version of the wikipedia.

I studied this stuff, while working 6 hours every night and taking care of my pregant girlfriend. Emotions are side effects and are not directly controlled by hormones.
With all the other things it does, is it any surprise that the brain runs your emotions? Maybe you got the exact toy you wanted for your birthday and you were really happy. Or your friend is sick and you feel sad. Or your little brother messed up your room, so you're really angry! Where do those feelings come from? Your brain, of course.
Your brain has a little bunch of cells on each side called the amygdala (say: uh-mig-duh-luh). The word amygdala is Latin for almond, and that's what this area looks like. Scientists believe that the amygdala is responsible for emotion. It's normal to feel all different kinds of emotions, good and bad. Sometimes you might feel a little sad, and other times you might feel scared, or silly, or glad.

No it's all good. Anyways bio is one of my lesser strengths. I'm top of my class in Medicine. So I understand, when one's answer is of lesser accuracy.
So Kerry listen to him.

Personally, I think both of you guys are correct, and it's nice that you both bring something a little different to the post.
Emotions are complex things, but they are controlled by neurotransmitters (chemicals in the brain), which are effected by hormones, esp. during puberty. Puberty really does mess with the mind, all that is true (although alot use it more as an excuse). And, depending on which part of the brain, and which neurotransmitters are involved, we 'feel' certain things with certain intensity.
Hormones are chemcal messengers, released in one part of the body, and produce effects in other parts. Think: Testosterone produced and released by testicles--->hair follicles in face, arm pits, pubes, etc.---->hair growth.
I'd give rep + to both of you, but I seem to have used up my allottment for the day!
