I've been thinking about getting a new graphics card since mines a year or two out of date... I have an intel 810 graphics card (from 1999) that I found in my basement lol. I have some spare cash so list what your graphics card is and on a scale of 1-10 how much you like it. Thanks. :D
scale of 1-10 for mine = 2

i have an onboard Nvidia 6150LE, clocked at 128mb. It's pretty shite but it does the job so about 7/10.
I'd recommend having a look on scan.co.uk, tigerdirect.com or newegg.com for a new card. IMO the three best hardware sites.

I've got a factory overclocked 9600GT (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127333). I run Team Fortress 2 at highest settings and FRAPS maxes out at 60FPS the whole time. 10/10 for me; it does all I need.

Thanks a lot both of you, but =O, what's the deal with this comment: " My number one issue, but not my only issue, with this card is that every time I need to boot my computer, I have to reset the bios." ? That would get annoying. And also, any idea if there's any limitation with the OS I have with any of the cards? I'm using Ubuntu so I'm not sure. I don't want to pay 200 bucks and then find out it isn't compatible lol.

Thanks for the important advice. XP
I have around 200 bucks to kill so I think I have a decent list generated. Thanks. :D

okay, I just popped in my new Nvidia 8400GS and it runs like a dream in ubuntu. If it doesn't work straight away, it should pick it up and install a generic set of drivers, or search the manufacturers site for linux drivers.

I've never had any issues like that. It was probably that guy's particular motherboard. About the compatibility, you need to look for Ubuntu drivers for the card you want before purchasing it.

eVGA Nvidia GeForce 8800GS. I'd probably rate it a 9-9.5/10 for what I use it for. It was only 90$ too. It makes absolutely no noise, either.

If you get a powerful card make sure it has dual slot cooling, it tends to be quieter.

lol I have ubuntu 7.10 on this one because it's a piece of junk. Nvidia is my frist choice, I've never had a comp with anything but nvidia

Honestly, I don't care if it's a jet engine in my room (and my mom wont either) as long as it works :D.

ATI Radeon HD 2600XT (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161203)
It does have a passive cooling system on it, so make sure that you have good airflow. I have 2 of these in my system, and I gotta tell you, it's a beast in crossfire! It's stock at 800MHz, but you can overclock it to 900MHz via ATI's Catalyst Control Center. I love it. :)

That doesn't matter. It's a 7 series, so it's the highest end card compared to the highest end card two generations newer. It doesn't even support DX10 or have a unified shader architecture. Also, the effective memory is not 4GB, and in quad SLI the 9800 would have the same. It's in separate cards, so you can't store anything larger than 1GB in the VRAM. Beyond a certain point the amount of memory doesn't really matter, anyway. The 7950 has 76.8GB/s of bandwidth, whereas the 9800 has 128GB/s of bandwidth. Not to mention the fact that if the 7950X2 were as fast as the 9800X2 it would probably melt your case in quad SLI because it's based on 90nm architecture, rather than 65nm and would have to be overclocked an insane amount; the 7950 has .556 billion transistors and the 9800 has 1.508 billion.

Yet I have a water cooling system, so my case can hold a quad and its updated I can combine the two and make them fucntion as a whole seeing as I have both Windows and linux so the possibalities are endless. My comp itself has 4 gigs or ram and with that processing power and a highly effiecient cooling system nothing goes wrong.

It's still not the fastest on the market. That's nice about your system operating without issues, but the cards are no longer the best. The video card market moves extremely quickly. That's why I don't believe in spending more than a couple hundred dollars on a card.
