View Full Version : Youtube Videos in Sigs

Firstly, sorry if this has been mentioned before, but I'm not as active here as I used to be for a while.

But I find it really annoying when people have videos in their sig. If that person has several replies in one thread it makes the page really long, it takes longer to load and uses more ram (not a problem for me but those who have less then 512mb could struggle).

So should they be allowed or not? I think not, not only because of computer issues and being annoying, I never watch them and I dont think many people do either.

I don't think they should be in signatures either.

I dont like the ideas of videos in sigs...it just makes sigs too big.

Also on a old forum I worked on, when they introduced utube video plugin, they made the rules so strict it was crazy. it was 2 per thread and a maximum of 20 posted per user.

Well I don't think we need to go that far that we limit users. Youtube videos in threads are fine.

Not in sigs though.

I don't think that they should be in signitures. It always slows down whenever I'm viewing a thread and a poster has a video in their signiture.

So far almost unaimous (how ever you spell that)

MoveAlong

personally I think it's pretty pointless to put something like that in your signature.
If it's a music video, post it in the music video thread in the music forum...in your signature, all it does really is slow down other's computers

Well not to call them out or anything but whoever voted yes, it would be nice if they write why...totally up to them of course. :) idk

I dunno. Everyone's against me though! :(

I don't really care actually, only like 2 people have them in there sigs anyway, but I have quite a bit of RAM, but I could still understand that it slows loading.

I think no, as mentioned before it makes the posts long and more annoying to scroll through, and I never watch them. Especially not multiple times.

Just to add on, (although having one post so far doesn't exactly make me a genius lol) I have an old Ubuntu 7.10 that has such sucky features that one video on the page adds another 30-40 seconds which doesn't sound like much, but after scrolling through the pages it adds up.

Are you kidding? What do you mean it doesn't sound like much?!?! That's insane!

A great example of why we should disallow them.

Ya, but you have no idea how ... (I have to look up the rule on what I and can't say.) annoying the video is. I can't even watch it my comp is so slow lol. And say you post 3 or 4 times on a page.. that's 3x20 to 30 seconds which means the page (for me... you all have nice store bought comps lol) wioll take an extra 60 to 90 seconds. On top of the 15 seconds it already takes...

I want a few people to go to a page and then wait 1 minute and 15 seconds before doing anything. See how annoying it gets after going to 10 or 12 different pages.

It doesn't come down to being mean. It comes to the point that other users computers have to take extra time to load a page if someone has a youtube video in their signiture and it slows down the computer.

It's not 92-7.....it's 25-2 ;)

i asume this is mostly towards me :D. but this is true, no one really does watch them i guess. so i guess if like 25 people dont like it then i will remove it. but i voted yes as long as the video doesnt take up too much space (i dont think mine does). also i did try to change it but when i do it says my BB code is too big or something like that. i made a post about it too.

Well you do realize that once an admin speaks on a subject (publically) it is going to become an actual rule and you will have to take down your video...right? So just enjoy your time until that happens. No that does not mean posting more into your sig.

I was simply reinforcing the fact that they are still allowed until officially barred.

87.10% of the people have spoken. This ladies and gentlemen is VT democracy in action.

These vids will slow down people on slower connections so it is a bit unfair. A signature, is something that is supposed to be short and to the point, not a big mad maze of information.

Since the people have spoken, call this the transition period. I ask all people with Vid's in their sig's to remove them. If you don't I will do it for you.

Sounds good to me.

On a more serious note, I agree with the majority, in that they are a nuisance and don't belong in signatures. Signatures are just brief "statements" [lyrics, words, poetry, etc.] that kind of represent who you are... And in some cases are helpful [i.e. contain links to things such as the "guide to rep" or explain something on the site]... Videos really aren't necessary, they slow up some people's computers, and they aren't a true expression of you. You can more easily express yourself through words than through a video you find on youtube.

On a simular topic i think the size of images should be limited too. Like Alex said, a sig is meant to be small, and I've seen some people using large images with text to bypass the limit of the amount of lines you can have.

Triple7
June 16th, 2008, 09:27 PM
A signature is not a billboard. Signatures should be kept small.

Inform a global mod or an admin of anyone whose signature is excessively large.

Aηdy
June 16th, 2008, 09:39 PM
You can limit the size of imaes in the admin cp. Although I will inform you guys if i see any because if the setting were changed it wouldn't take effect on current sigs.

Well how about posting it in a thread then? Instead of using up my internet bandwidth and slowing people's computers down.

This is a rule that has been implied.

I was just gonna address this but you guys beat me.

Admins I think we should add this to the FAQ.

And Jon, don't worry. The Viral Video Hut will be up in...a few weeks?
