well i have heard at least 1 explanation for body hair, including arm pit and scrotum hair. and that is that it grows to help protect the area, which makes sense with the hair on your head and around that pubic region in general, but sounds odd for arm pits.

The biological reason the hair is there is because the hormones stimulate the growth. However, I believe the evolutionary reason is that pubic, etc. hair serves as a visble sign, an indicator that the owner is sexually mature.

It's a display, like the plume of the peacock!

For reasons including protection and for when we excrete (sweat)

I think it's all of the above^

It could protct the scrotum from cold weather by insulation.
It could also show sexual maturity. There's many ways in the animal kingdom where this is shown and this may be our species' way. Showing sexual maturity is important, so that an animal can tell which potential mate is the best, fertile potential mate.

And also, the hair could capture pheromones. Pheromones are "Chemicals emitted by an organism to influence the behavior of other organisms of the same species." - Google search. They can be used to attract mates in the animal kingdom, and by "influencing the behavior", making them hot for the animal secreting the pheromones. Pheromones are commonly produced by mammals through sweat - men in particular, through armpit sweat. The hair may catch the sweat so it can stay on our body instead of running off or evaporating, attracting mates.

I've read and heard about an armpit fetish some people have. Examples (may sound creepy) smelling, licking, etc. Some people think it's sort of a turn on, and probably because they are a place where pheromones are secreted.

(p.s. I have no idea why guys sweat so much, though, we're not always trying "attract a mate" :|)

The same could apply for the scrotum - after all, it is a sexual area, and that probably means pheromones are present.

It could semi-protect the scrotum (I don't see really how though..)

I could see that having scrotum hair is for protecting it and everything. For pit hair, I think it's mainly for sweat. I'm not sure.

~~~
i always personally thought that back in the really old days for cavemen and such, they had pubic hair to keep them warm. Right? that would make sense, i mean, all they really had were animal skins and basic clothes, no underwear.
i mean, wouldnt the human race just suddenyl end if your balls got frozen during the winter :yeah:
just a thought.
it is to reduce friction. think about what happens in the areas you have hair.
In days before heaters and fireplaces, humans relied on body warmth to keep warm. The more hair you have, the warmer you are.
I though the scrotum was naturally warm... But that's something new then
Scrotum hair keeping you warm? Exactly how much do you have!! And, why would you need to be kept warm only after puberty? Wouldn't you think evolution would favor protecting young 'uns more, when they'd be more vulnerable?
Nah, I think it's a display, to alert reeceptive females that you're sexually mature.
The reason for the hair was as IAMSam and flex said it is and indicator that you are physically ready for sex and also to keep you warm
Flex has it covered really
I also say its basic protection aswell, almost like a airbag to prevent lots of injury.
but it's really for insulation I reckon
