I see you look at my sweat stained skin
Caked with dirt, my smile grim
You look at me as though affright
I see your eyes rove towards the flickering light
You ask me how and why not for you
And I say….
Alas my days of toil are through
I lay wake under the midnight’s dew
Reminiscing on the melting sun
Alas rest from my day now done
So sweet the pain that brought us through
Through aching back and fingers blue
I till the soil, sowing too
No shade but for the puffy few
No drink but for a melons blood
You look at me covered in crud
Aghast, ashamed, afraid maybe?
Indeed I feel no pain but if only for you
I am in no pain young blood
You see alas the time is here
When all these childish cares
Will have to disappear
You see the time is here when you
Shall have ….
A pick, hoe and shovel in hand
A new pair of shoes you seek
You are now old enough to tend these sheep
You look at me about to weep
I tell you boy life is not like its fleece
Amidst the wool thorns await
That doth prick and aggravate
Nothing in life is free
Hear me now boy
I cannot afford to loose you to the streets!
Caked with dirt, my smile grim
You look at me as though affright
I see your eyes rove towards the flickering light
You ask me how and why not for you
And I say….
Alas my days of toil are through
I lay wake under the midnight’s dew
Reminiscing on the melting sun
Alas rest from my day now done
So sweet the pain that brought us through
